St. Josef in Herten

The Josefskirche in the Rheinfeld district of Herten is a Roman Catholic church under the patronage of Saint Joseph . As an institutional church of the disabled aid organization Sankt Josefshaus , which also gave the church its name, it does not represent a pastoral care unit of the Archdiocese of Freiburg . The neo-baroque building was built between 1928 and 1929.

history

The plans to build a separate church for the Sankt Josefshaus go back to 1914. The outbreak of the First World War delayed construction until 1927. Under the direction of the Rheinfeld architect Kern and the engineer Geis, a rectangular hall church was built between 1928 and 1929 . It was consecrated by the Freiburg bishop Wilhelm Burger on October 20, 1929 . A renovation in 1965 gave the church its sober appearance. The pictures of the side altars and the pictures of the Stations of the Cross were also hung up . The demand for intuition and warmth during devotion and prayer prompted the house management to hang up the pictures again in 1967. In 2004 the church building was completely renovated and the church interior was redesigned.

Church building

Virgin Mary statue

The rectangular, single-nave church is set back from the main road through Herten. On the west side there is a vestibule with three arched arcades on the facade . In the vestibule there are various panels and a statue of Karl Rolfus, the founder of the Sankt Josefshaus, standing on a pedestal. On the right side a spiral staircase leads to the organ gallery .

A niche with a larger than life statue of the Madonna opens in the middle above the arcade openings. The curved and slightly decorated gables correspond to the shapes of the so-called Swabian Baroque. Below the tip there is an oval ox-eye . The nave, which is covered with a gable roof , has a wrought-iron cross at its top facing the west facade.

At the eastern end of the roof a small bell tower with an onion dome rises above the roof ridge .

Furnishing

View into the nave towards the organ gallery

The bright interior of the church was supplemented in 1945 with 14 pictures of the Stations of the Cross , which were painted by the artist Peter Valentin Junior from Offenburg . The light falls into the nave through twelve windows decorated with stucco garlands . The altar was created by Peter Valentin Senior from Offenburg; the main picture shows Jesus Christ . The cafeteria on a pedestal in the choir and the tabernacle are richly decorated. On both sides of the altar, two side altars: the left is Maria dedicated, the right the patron Josef. They were created by Josef Wagenbrenner (1880–1953) from Rastatt.

The organ in the gallery above the main entrance was built in 1930 by Xaver Mönch's workshop from Überlingen . It includes two manuals , a pedal and 25 stops . The instrument, which works with a membrane drawer and a pneumatic keyboard and stop mechanism , was renovated in 1981.
