Chūbu Denryoku KK ( Japanese 中部 電力 株式会社 , Chūbu denryoku kabushiki kaisha ; literally: Electric power Chūbu ; short: 中 電 , Chūden ; English Chubu Electric Power Company, Incorporated ) is the third largest electricity supplier in Japan.

The service area includes the prefectures of Mie , Aichi , Gifu , Nagano and Shizuoka west of the Fuji River . The river forms the boundary between the network frequency of the Japanese electricity network of 50 Hz in the east and 60 Hz in the west.

history

In April 1939, shortly before the start of the Second World War , all electricity-generating companies were nationalized and in 1942 they were merged into nine state-owned companies. At the instigation of Yasuzaemon Matsunaga , the chairman of the council for the reorganization of the electricity industry, the Allied occupation authorities had these nine companies privatized on May 1, 1951, one of which was Chūbu Denryoku. These initially retained their regional monopolies and, after the ineffective liberalization of the electricity market in 1995, regional quasi-monopolies.

Chūden company figures for the years 2002, 2003 and 2008 to 2013:

Power plants and power grid

The company's power plants have a total installed capacity of 34 GW, of which 25 GW are thermal power plants. 189 of the 205 power plants are hydropower plants. Chūden also maintains combined cycle power plants operated with LNG , oil power plants , a coal power plant and three nuclear reactors at the Hamaoka location. The largest power plants in Chūden by installed capacity are:

The transmission network operated by Chūden has a length of 12,250 km. The highest voltage levels are 500 kV and 275 kV. The distribution network comprises lines with a length of 132,435 km. Chūden also operates 941 substations and a frequency converter in Higashi-Shimizu with 300 MW, which forms a connection to the Tepco network .

In the summer of 2013, as a result of a heat wave, there was a load peak of 26,440 MW, which could still be covered by the secured output of 27,370 MW.

Energy source

The shutdown of the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in May 2011 meant that more than 90% of electricity now has to be generated from fossil fuels. In the 2013 financial year, Chūden required 10.566 million tonnes of coal, 13.015 million tonnes of LNG and 557 million liters of oil to operate the power plants. Most of the LNG in 2013 came from Qatar (8.14 million t). Other important supplier countries were Indonesia (1.24 million t), Australia (1.21 million t) and Nigeria (0.83 million t).

Chūden has also participated in LNG projects in Australia and the USA ( Freeport port ) to ensure the supply of LNG. Furthermore, Chūden acquired shares in two LNG tankers . In the Ise Bay there are several power plants of the company that LNG as fuel use. That is why the infrastructure for LNG (berths for LNG tankers, storage tanks and a pipeline that runs through the bay) was expanded.

Distribution of power plant capacity by energy source for the years 2002, 2003 and 2008 to 2013:

Shareholders

The main shareholders of Chūden at the end of the 2013 financial year were:

  • Japan Trustee Services Bank, Ltd. (8.23%)
  • The Master Trust Bank of Japan, Ltd. (6.50%)
  • Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company (5.21%)
  • Nippon Life Insurance Company (4.09%)

Subsidiaries and holdings

Chūden has various subsidiaries, including:

  • C Energy Co., Ltd. : In 2012, C Energy Co., Ltd. merged and LNG Chubu Corporation . In 2013, Chubu took over the remaining shares in C Energy Co., Ltd. participating companies in order to take into account the increased importance of LNG. The sale of gas and LNG rose from 10,000 t in the 2001 financial year to 840,000 t in 2013.
  • Chubu Energy Trading, Inc. (CET): CET was founded in December 2007 to work with EDF Trading , a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDF , to acquire coal for the Hekinan power plant , Chubu's only coal-fired power plant. CET is a 100% subsidiary of Chūden. At the beginning of 2012, CET's trading business was transferred to the newly founded Chubu Energy Trading Singapore Pte Ltd , also a 100% subsidiary.

In addition, Chūden has various participations abroad, e. B. at the power plants Ras Laffan B and C in Qatar as well as on various LNG projects.

Impact of Fukushima

As a result of Fukushima, the Hamaoka nuclear power plant was shut down in May 2011. The following table shows the impact on fuel spending:

Impact on fuel spending:
Fiscal year Fuel Spending (billion yen) Total Spending (Billion Yen) Proportion of (%)
2003 392.770 1,787.842 22nd
2007 662.191 1,884.639 35
2008 828.229 2,067,487 40
2012 1,194.820 2,514,583 47
2013 1,314.105 2,715,414 48

Chūden maintains a frequency converter in Higashi-Shimizu . As it turned out after Fukushima, the capacity of all frequency converters in Japan of 1,000 MW was not sufficient to transfer enough energy from the western network (60 Hz) to the eastern network (50 Hz). The capacity of Higashi-Shimizu was therefore increased from 100 MW to 300 MW by February 2013. In addition, it was decided in January 2013 to increase the capacity of all converters from 1,200 MW to 2,100 MW.

Others

Since March 30, 2007, Fumio Kawaguchi (until 2006 CEO) has been Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Nagoya region. The board spokesman of Chūden has his consular office in the company.
