Clásico RCN

The Clásico RCN (sp., Dt .: RCN classic ) is a Colombian cycling - stage race .

For a long time, alongside the Vuelta a Colombia, the most important Colombian bike race will be. a. sponsored by Radio Cadena Nacional , one of the oldest and largest Colombian radio stations. The first race took place in 1961 and was won by Ruben Dario Gomez. Numerous famous Colombian professional cyclists have won the Clásico RCN, including Martín Emilio Rodríguez , Fabio Parra and Luis Herrera .

During the 1980s, some events of the Clásico RCN " open " were held. Professional cycling teams from Europe also took part in these races , including Peugeot-Shell-Michelin , Renault-Elf-Gitane , SEM-France Loire , La Vie Claire , Zor and Reynolds .

Two overall winners of the race were disqualified for doping : In 1971, Álvaro Pachón Morales was disqualified and the win was awarded to Rafael Antonio Niño. Likewise, in 1991, Fabio Hernán Rodríguez was declared the winner after the disqualification of Pablo Wilches.

A tragic racing accident occurred during the 1985 edition of the race: the driver Jorge Iván Ramírez died as a result of a fall.

From 2004 onwards, the race was no longer included in the international racing calendar of the World Cycling Federation Union Cycliste Internationale . a. allows the participation of Colombian Continental teams and a maximum of three foreign teams, but excludes the invitation of teams in the ProTeam and Professional Continental Team categories .
