history
Clanton was founded in 1866 or, according to another source, in 1868 as Goose Pond when Chilton County was formed. In 1871, prompted by the establishment of a post office, the city was renamed after the politician and brigadier general James Holt Clanton and incorporated in 1873. City founder Alfred Baker was also the first mayor of Clantons and an important player in the development of the city and the county. He owned several shops, a department store, a hotel and donated the land on which the courthouse was built in 1896 .
The city experienced strong growth through the construction of two dams in the early 20th century, as well as through the development and expansion of the textile industry.
Today, Clanton is best known for its peach-shaped reservoir, alluding to the importance of the county's peach industry, which accounts for about 80% of Alabama's peach harvest. It was built in 1994.
Clanton Airport is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a site under the name Gragg Field Historic District (as of July 8, 2019).
