The Clarahütte is a mountain hut belonging to the Essen section of the German Alpine Club in the Umbal Valley in the middle of the Austrian Hohe Tauern National Park .
history
The hut was built in 1872 at the suggestion of the section chairman Johann Stüdl of the then Prague section of the DuOeAV . The hut is named after Clara Edle von Ratzenbeck, whose husband, Prokop, a wholesaler in Prague, financed the first construction and donated the hut to the Section in 1895 after his death. In 1914, 1926 and 2012 there was major avalanche damage.
After the ban by the German Alpine Club in 1945, the hut was not reopened until 1958 and expanded from 1969 to 1974. In 2013 work began on completely renovating the hut for one million euros and at the same time building an extension that will contain several double and triple rooms. The construction time was estimated at 3 years.
