The Ahrner Kopf ( 3051  m slm , Italian Cima del Vento ) is a summit in the west of the Venediger group and lies on the Austrian-Italian border between East and South Tyrol . This borderline coincides here with the border between the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park and the Hohe Tauern National Park . The Ahrner Kopf is located in the ridge between the Dreiherrenspitze ( 3499  m ) in the northeast and the Rötspitze ( 3496  m ) in the south, the closest peaks are the Hohe Rosshuf ( 3199  m ) and the Virgilkopf ( 3036  m ). Despite its proximity to significantly higher and better-known peaks, the Ahrner Kopf, framed by the front and rear Umbaltörl ( 2949  m and 2849  m ), is a somewhat independent three-thousand-meter peak , with its quite clear ridges to the north and south as well as the steep flanks to the west and east can be quite impressive from some perspective.

The mountain is mentioned as early as 1583 in a description of a borderline, at that time it was called "Auer Kopf", which was derived from "Auerhof". This name was later changed to the current name. Locals pronounce it as Agna head . On the initiative of the innkeeper of the Lenkjöchlhütte , a summit cross was erected on the mountain in 2004, which was inaugurated in summer 2005.

Increase opportunities

Usually the mountain is climbed from the South Tyrolean side. The starting point is Kasern in the inner Ahrntal ( 1595  m ). The Lenkjöchlhütte ( 2603  m ), which can be reached from Kasern either through the Röttal or the Windtal, can serve as a base . About 50 meters below the hut, a marked hiking trail branches off from the path leading from the wind valley to the hut . This initially crosses the north-western flank of the Untere Rötspitze almost evenly and continues up and down through a depression in which long remains of old snow can be found on the western flank of the mountain. Going up over a ridge you come to a path division where the path to the Vorderen Umbaltörl branches off in a southerly direction. From there, a rather steep climb leads through the western flank of the Ahrner Kopf, which just below the summit reaches its south ridge, over which the last few meters have to be covered. This ascent is not difficult , an alternative that is only slightly more difficult is to continue at the previously mentioned junction to the Vorderen Umbaltörl and from there to the summit via the south ridge. However, this is quite coarse in the lower part. When climbing from East Tyrol, you will usually use this variant on the last meters to the summit. The Vordere Umbaltörl can be reached from the east from the Clarahütte ( 2038  m ) through the Umbaltal , whereby the Philipp-Reuter-Bivouac ( 2672  m ) on the way, just below the Vorderen Umbaltörl, can be used as a base.

The ascent of the Ahrner Kopf is also suitable as a ski tour , the route that is usually taken largely corresponds to that in summer, whereby one usually chooses the variant through the Wind Valley. However, there can be a considerable risk of avalanches in the steep, upper area of the western flank, especially after fresh snow has fallen and wind movement .
