Colin Anthony Doyle (born June 12, 1985 in Cork ) is an Irish football goalkeeper .

Career

Doyle joined Birmingham City in the summer of 2001 at the age of 16 and signed his first professional contract three years later. He made his professional debut in November 2004 during a month-long loan from Chester City in the Football League Trophy against AFC Rochdale . From December to the end of the season, another loan period at the second division club Nottingham Forest followed, where he came to four competitive appearances behind regular goalkeeper Paul Gerrard .

In the 2005/06 season still without a chance to use Birmingham, he was loaned to Millwall FC in November 2005 and came there to a total of 14 league appearances, but could not prevent the club's relegation to Football League One . Birmingham had meanwhile been relegated from the Premier League and with the departure of the previous goalkeeper Nico Vaesen, Doyle moved up to "number 2" behind Maik Taylor . Doyle made his competitive debut for Birmingham in the 2006/07 League Cup in a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town and made his league debut for the club four days later. In February 2007 he ousted Taylor from the starting line-up and justified his line-up in the following weeks with numerous convincing performances, the climax was a 3-2 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers when he saved a penalty in injury time. At the end of the season, Doyle finished second in the table with Birmingham and rose again to the Premier League. The performances of the multiple junior national player did not go unnoticed by the Irish national coach Steve Staunton and so Doyle came on May 22, 2007 in a friendly match against Ecuador at the Giants Stadium in New York (final score 1: 1) to his debut for the Irish national team .

At the start of the 2007/08 Premier League season , coach Steve Bruce initially relied on Doyle, but after only one point from the first three games and some uncertainties, the more experienced Taylor was preferred again and Richard Kingson was the substitute bench on the following matchdays nominated. As a result, Doyle was only used sporadically in the cup competitions, even after the direct relegation he was hardly able to play behind Taylor. With the loan commitment of Joe Hart to the Premier League season 2009/10 Doyle was behind Hart and Taylor only "number 3" in the goalkeeper hierarchy, a situation that remained unchanged by the commitment of Ben Foster for the 2010/11 season. On August 10, 2010 Doyle was awarded to Coventry City and was immediately used in the League Cup. His stay at Coventry ended the following day, as Doyle was recalled from Birmingham due to an injury to Foster.
