The Transports publics Genevois (TPG) are a public transport company in Switzerland and act as a self-directed operation of the Canton of Geneva . In the city of Geneva and the neighboring communities, they operate the Geneva tram , which opened in 1862, the Geneva trolleybus , which opened in 1942, and various bus lines. TPG emerged on January 1, 1977 from the private predecessor company Compagnie Genevoise des Tramways Électriques (CGTE) . This in turn was founded in 1899 and was a merger of the Compagnie générale des tramways suisses (TS) with the Société genevoise des chemins de fer à voie étroite (VE) .
history
Towards the end of the 19th century, Geneva had an extensive tram network, which had three different drive systems: electric , steam and horse-drawn tram . This was operated by two large companies, the Compagnie générale des tramways suisses (TS) and the Société genevoise des chemins de fer à voie étroite (VE) .
On August 11, 1899, the Compagnie genevoise des tramways électriques was founded. The company has a share capital of 5 million francs . On December 1, 1900, TS was bought up, and VE was also bought up a month later. The modernization of the network begins with the re-gauging of the TS network to meter gauge , the electrification of the old VE network and the purchase of new vehicles.
After the First World War , the overland lines committed to be in deficit, whereupon the CGTE closes some lines. The CGTE lacked the money to renew and expand the network, so in 1938 additional routes had to be converted to bus operation. During the Second World War , some routes had to be put back into operation because there were bottlenecks in petrol for bus traffic.
From the 1950s onwards, private transport became more important and the tram was seen as a nuisance. Within the next ten years all tram lines will disappear except for 12 and the ligne de ceinture (ring line). In this way, the vehicle fleet was also fundamentally renewed. In 1969 the ring line was converted to bus transport, and the number of passengers continued to decrease. Line 12, the only remaining line, connects Carouge with Moillesulaz and carries a quarter of all CGTE passengers.
In 1971, a requested public petition that the CGTE is taken over by the canton. In 1975 this law was elected by the people and the Grand Council decided to organize the Transports publics genevois . On January 1, 1977, the CGTE became the TPG.
From 1988, after the sovereign had approved a law to expand public transport, the TPG experienced a phase of expansion. The modernization of the vehicle fleet (tram and bus) brings further increases in passenger numbers. Since January 1, 2007, tourists staying in a Geneva hotel have received the Geneva Transport Card free of charge . This applies to all public transport in Geneva. The current TPG logo was introduced in spring 2007.
Unireso
Since 2001 the TPG, with the SBB and the Mouettes genevoises , have been members of the Unireso tariff association . This enables passengers with one ticket to use several modes of transport (bus, tram, train).
TOSA
Since the beginning of 2013, a project called TOSA ( Trolleybus Optimization Système Alimentation ' Trolleybus Optimization System Power Supply') has been worked on. Here, battery buses on a suitably equipped stop within 15 seconds charged, so that - unlike in trolley buses - no overhead line is needed. The project, which costs five million Swiss francs, 3.3 million of which come from ABB, was inaugurated during the UITP congress in May 2013 in Geneva.
Until March 2014 such a bus commuted from the Palexpo stop to the airport ; There is a charging station at both stops. The bus has a pantograph that connects to the charging station at the bus stop. This is correctly aligned shortly before the station so that it only has to reach into the power rail. At the final stop, the battery charges up within 3 to 4 minutes, in the depot it takes 30 minutes to fully charge. Partners in the project are TPG, ABB , SIG and Opi. Line 23 has been the first line to be operated with new battery buses since December 2017.

"Noctambus"
Since September 2, 1995, a night bus network , Noctambus called into service. The first line connected Meyrin with downtown Geneva at the weekend. From March 1996 a second line was built, now a total of 12 lines are in operation, which also serve some municipalities in France.
