Conrad Sutter (born September 19, 1856 in Karlsruhe , † October 22, 1927 in Bethel near Bielefeld ) was a German architect and graphic artist .

Life

After studying architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Sutter moved to Mainz in 1885 , where his main interest was urban planning, specifically the connection between the old and new towns on the banks of the Rhine. He was a member of the commission that campaigned for the preservation of the Electoral Palace . In the architectural competition for a development plan for the area between the castle and the new Christ Church , his design based on Friedrich Pützer took second place, whereby he envisaged an interlocking, gradually narrowing sequence of spaces with a view of the dome of the Christ Church. For the Christ Church itself, he proposed the construction of a campanile in order to increase its urban impact. In 1888/1895 Sutter published his book on the tower .

At Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt , he built the Sutter House, including the interior furnishings, for the Hessian State Exhibition for Fine and Applied Arts in Darmstadt in 1908 . Due to Sutter's idiosyncratic planning, which had strong echoes of the traditionalist style and few Art Nouveau elements, the building was exhibited against the jury's protest under the architect's own artistic responsibility . At that time, he gave Lichtenberg Castle in the Odenwald as his place of residence .

During the First World War , Sutter worked as a war painter on the Western Front in 1916 and published his most important works in 1918 under the title Etchings from the Western Theater of War .
