The coronavirus update is a podcast from Norddeutscher Rundfunk , which is moderated by Korinna Hennig, initially alternating with Anja Martini. The 25- to 60-minute conversations with Christian Drosten , the head of virology at the Berlin Charité , deal scientifically with various aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 pandemic . While from February 26 to April 8, 2020, issues were initially published daily from Monday to Friday, the broadcast frequency was increased to every two days from April 14, 2020, to two issues per week from April 27, 2020 and from June 16 2020 reduced to one issue a week. After the podcast was on a summer break from June 23, 2020 to the end of August 2020, Christian Drosten will take turns with the virologist Sandra Ciesek as a weekly guest .

Goal, professional horizon, listener service

The declared aim of the podcast is to inform, classify and provide background information. The podcast is intended to "inform as many people as possible as well as possible - without causing unnecessary panic". The podcast is also intended to serve science.

The NDR-Info science editors Anja Martini (episodes 4, 5, 9-14, 17, 20, 22, 24 and 27) and Korinna Hennig (the other episodes up to 50) interview Christian Drosten about the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and the Lung disease COVID-19 caused by the virus . Epidemic coronaviruses are Drosten's research field. The podcast is now being produced by a team of over ten employees.

The physicist Dirk Brockmann , who researches epidemic modeling in computer simulations , also took part in episode 30 . During the summer break of the Drosten interviews, 2 special episodes have been produced so far, in which Anja Martini and 4 scientists look at the topic from different perspectives. For August 27, 2020, there is a third special series with professors Ciesek (virology, Frankfurt) and Muntau (pediatric and adolescent medicine, Hamburg) as well as professors Wieler (president of the Robert Koch Institute ) and Kriegel (air conditioning and heating technology, TU Berlin) planned.

Apart from the pure podcast episodes, the production team now also offers a transcript for each episode. There is also a glossary in which many of the technical terms used are explained in alphabetical order, as well as a bibliography of the journal articles and studies mentioned in the podcast.

Origin, structure, topics, format

The idea for the podcast came about at the suggestion of Norbert Grundei , the head of the radio station N-Joy and the "NDR Audio-Labs Think Radio", who had seen Drosten as a conversation partner on various programs. After Drosten's approval, the program was moved to the science desk of the radio station NDR Info and started within a few days.

The first episode of the podcast was released on February 26, 2020 and the episodes broadcast have since then usually been structured in such a way that Korinna Hennig or Anja Martini, science editors at NDR Info, call Christian Drosten in the morning and interview him for between 25 and 60 minutes: to SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19, on aspects of ongoing research and professional exchange with colleagues worldwide, on the tasks and importance of laboratory diagnostics in the current situation, on the separation of science and politics and on the assessment of the situation in Germany and other countries. Occasionally the editors pick up questions from the audience. In episode 30 a guest could be heard with the epidemiologist Dirk Brockmann .

In terms of format, the podcast was originally intended to be a dialogue, but this cannot be carried out because of the time delays in the muPRO app used, says Korinna Hennig. As a result, the editors only barely had a say, especially in the early days.

From episode 31 the podcast appeared every two days, from episode 36 twice a week. This should give Drosten more time to both pursue his research work and read studies that could be discussed in the podcast.

distribution

The podcast became very popular in a short period of time. According to Grundei, the episodes had been viewed more than 15 million times by March 26, 2020, and 41 million views by May 8, 2020. For the first 26 episodes, i.e. by the end of April 2020, there were around 14,000 responses from listeners; each of the two editors received around 50 emails a day during this time.

The NDR distributes the podcast in various ways, including external ones: In addition to the ARD audio library , the ARD media library and the NDR offers, the podcast can be obtained via RSS , iTunes , Spotify , YouTube , Telegram and Facebook Messenger . Furthermore, the podcast runs in the linear program of the NDR radio stations NDR Info and N-Joy as well as on NDR television (with illustration images), but partly shortened. The podcast is now heard in 60 countries, says Grundei.

reception

Due to its high distribution, the content of the podcast is regularly received in other media.

The podcast itself was described as “ science communication in the best sense”, the Bavarian State Center for Political Education recommended the podcast as a “reliable source”. Drosten's informative, partly lecturing nature of the explanation and the fact that he shows the limits of his own knowledge as well as his professional field is particularly positively emphasized. He also involves the listener in his thought process, among other things by questioning himself and revising his own theses. The science journalist Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim praised the podcast, Drosten delighted listeners with a scientific level that is otherwise rarely present in the media.

Media journalists referred to Christian Drosten as the “explainer of the nation” because of the podcast; the media psychologist Schwab attributed to him the function of a "pastor" and a "solid rock". The Deutschlandfunk-Kultur editors Karla Kenya and Dennis Kogel described the podcast as the “German serial moment” and alluded to the breakthrough of podcasts in the US market with the series Serial . Nevertheless, it is also critically noted that Drosten lacks an equally well-informed journalistic specialist world as a questioning counterpart, because he has a special status due to his special knowledge.

The music cabaret artist Bodo Wartke dedicated a song to Drosten and his podcast.

Awards

The podcast received the Grimme Online Award in the “Information” category in 2020 and won the audience award. The jury pointed to the potential of imparting knowledge via podcasts and stated that “a competent editorial team and moderation [needs] so that popularity and the ability to differentiate are not mutually exclusive”.

On behalf of the podcast team, the moderators and science journalists Korinna Hennig and Katharina Mahrenholtz were awarded the Federal Press Conference Prize 2020.
