Londonderry ( Irish Doire ) is one of the six historic counties of Northern Ireland . The name Derry is used by residents of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Catholics .
geography
The county ( county ) is between Lough Foyle , Lough Neagh and the flow spell . It encompasses a fertile plain, which is partly made of basalt , partly made of limestone and is largely covered with ice-age deposits. To the west lies the Sperrin Mountains .
history
In the Middle Ages the area belonged to the Kingdom of Ulster , later to Aileach or Tyrone . The county was formed under the name County Coleraine , its current name it received in 1613. Since 1920 , the county belongs to Great Britain and Northern Ireland .
economy
The industry is concentrated in the cities of Londonderry and Coleraine . There is linen industry , shipbuilding and chemical industry here . In agriculture , sheep farming and the cultivation of oats and potatoes predominate. There are some important fishing ports on the coast , as well as the seaside resort of Portstewart .
