The first documented cricket games in Vienna took place in the 1890s. During the occupation of Austria after World War II , cricket was mainly played by Allied soldiers . As a popular sport , cricket has not been able to establish itself in Austria, as in the rest of continental Europe . Even today, the majority of active players in Austria originally come from "traditional" cricket nations such as Australia , England , India and Pakistan .

ACA Open League
The ACA Open League is a single innings 50- over cricket league in Austria. In 2006 it was split into two parallel conferences , the Austrian Conference and the National Conference, to allow more teams to participate. The first three teams per conference qualified for the Super Sixes. The best two teams from the Super Sixes then played against each other in the final. Teams that could not qualify for the Super Sixes continued to play in local consolation tournaments, the so-called plate competitions : Viennese Plate (for the Viennese clubs) and Southern Plate (for everyone else).
In 2009 the tournament had to be held as a 35-over tournament because there were problems with the timing of the league due to the unavailability of the cricket ground in Markomannenstrasse (Vienna). In the previous year, logistical problems led to the parallel conference system being modified. A regionalized structure was introduced, a Viennese group and a non-Viennese group. The best 6 Viennese teams and the best 2 non-Viennese teams then qualified for the knockout phase.
The first winner of the Open League since the division into conferences was the Vienna Lions CC, after the Five Continents CC was defeated in the final. This game took place in September 2006 in Seebarn. In this first Open League in the current format, the United Nations CC won the Viennese Plate and the CC Velden '91 the Southern Plate.
