Curalha is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Chaves . It has a population of 469 (as of June 30, 2011).

geography

The place lies above the river Tâmega in the rough, varied landscape of the northern Portuguese region of Alto Trás-os-Montes . Curalha is 7 km southwest of the county town of Chaves, and about 50 km north of the district capital Vila Real .

history

Excavations show human settlement in today's municipal area at least since the Iron Age . The outstanding monument of this time is the Castro da Curalha , which was probably founded in pre-Roman times and was also settled further in Roman times. The place has been an independent municipality since the 17th century.

The film director Manoel de Oliveira shot a documentary here in 1959 ( O Pão , English: The Bread), and, under the influence of the strong traditions that have remained alive here, decided to make his first feature film after a long break. The resulting O Acto da Primavera (Eng: The Act of Spring, Eng. Title: The Passion of Jesus in Curalha) won a gold medal at the Siena Film Festival and established Oliveira's future international orientation.

Culture and sights

In addition to the excavations from the Celtiberian and Roman times, there are other various other buildings in the community under monumental protection, such as a church built in the 17th century and showing Mannerist elements since the renovation in the 18th century , a water mill, which was built in 1910 on the basis of an earlier mill from the 18th century, and a well system from the 19th century. The train station and the railway bridge over the Rio Tâmega are also worth seeing .
