To the south of the mountain town of Jöhstadt, which was founded in 1513 on the corridor of the forest hoof village Goswinsdorf , mentioned in 1386, the settlement "Dürrenberg" was built in the 17th century on the slope between Jöhstädter Schwarzwasser and the border with the Kingdom of Bohemia . It was settled by immigration of Protestant religious refugees from Bohemia, so-called exiles .

There are two different interpretations of the origin of the place name “Dürrenberg”. The first interpretation is based on the assumption that the immigrant exiles, who came across the border to Saxony because of the Counter-Reformation that started in Bohemia, called their new settlement in the desert and barren area "arid mountain" between 1623 and 1651. The second, less valid interpretation derives the name from the Electoral Saxon troops returning from the Turkish wars in Hungary. When they returned in 1531, they brought a large number of Turks with them, who camped on the opposite mountain in front of Jöhstadt. Politically, Dürrenberg has always belonged to Jöhstadt and, like this one, was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon office of Selva until 1856 . From 1856 the place belonged to the Jöhstadt judicial office and from 1875 to the district administration Annaberg . In the 19th century Dürrenberg had 20 houses. Opposite on the Bohemian side was the Hegerhaus settlement belonging to Christophhammer with the inn of the same name. Today it is called Hájovna and is no longer inhabited.

In the 19th century Dürrenberg also experienced an industrial boom. The FA Angersche factory was built in the center of the village. This was in the house of Brand-Kat.-Nr. 97 at the Dürrenberg by Friedrich August and Friedrich Hermann Anger. Until 1880 this factory was known as the so-called "Lohmühle" (Brand-Kat.-Nr. 111 am Dürrenberg). In addition to a woodworking factory, the Fladersche factory for the construction of fire extinguishers was built east of Dürrenberg. Between 1870 and 1907 it had a branch factory in the neighboring Bohemian village of Pleil-Sorgenthal for export to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . The Fladersche factory is known today under the name of PF Pumpen und Feuerlöschtechnik GmbH .

On June 1, 1892, Dürrenberg was connected to the Selva – Jöhstadt narrow-gauge railway. The Jöhstadt train station was built directly on the lower town limits of Jöhstadt. The Fladersche Fabrik and the Angersche Möbelfabrik in the Dürrenberg district received a siding. In 1964 the section between the train station and the Jöhstadt loading point was taken out of service and then dismantled until 1967. Rail traffic in Jöhstadt station ended on January 13, 1984, after the responsible railway maintenance department no longer wanted to take responsibility for continued operation on the ailing tracks. Between 1992 and 2000 the Jöhstadt – Steinbach section was reactivated as a museum railway under the name “Preßnitztalbahn”. In the early 1990s, a house in Dürrenberg also served as a club residence.

Politically, as part of the city of Jöhstadt, Dürrenberg belonged to the Annaberg district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ) through the second district reform in the GDR since 1952 , which was continued as the Saxon district of Annaberg from 1990 and in 2008 in the Erzgebirgskreis rose. While the factory for fire extinguishers is still producing today, the closed furniture factory was demolished in 2009/2010.
