The series ET 174 of the German Federal Railroad designated baggage railcars of the S-Bahn Hamburg .
From 1939 the power supply of the Hamburg S-Bahn was switched from alternating current overhead lines to direct current busbars . Initially, the older DR 1589a / b to 1645a / b multiple units were used in parallel with the new DC multiple units, until AC operation was finally discontinued in 1955. At this point in time, the new ET 171 took over the entire train service, the AC multiple units were parked.
Two railcars with the numbers elT 1642a / b and elT 1643a / b were converted into luggage railcars in 1954 and 1958. In addition to expanding the seats and converting the passenger compartment into a luggage compartment with large sliding doors in the side walls, the entire electrical system had to be rebuilt, in particular the power consumption from pantographs for the AC contact line on the roof to those that supply the direct current on the floor of the vehicle -Painted busbar. Here the DB used components from the current production of a third series ET 171. The vehicles with a Scharfenberg coupling , which some of the old railcars had already received before the war, were used as luggage railcars.
The two railcars were designated as ET / ES 174 001 and 002 and used in general cargo traffic on the Hamburg S-Bahn network. Both vehicles were retired in 1967 and scrapped soon after.
