DEC Multinational Character Set
The multinational character set (short DEC MCS ) is a character set that from the Digital Equipment Corporation for use with the VT220 - Terminal was designed (1983). It is an 8-bit extension of ASCII with additional letters with accents , currency symbols , and other characters that are missing in 7-bit ASCII.
There were many such extensions of ASCII, the special thing about DEC MCS is that it is a direct ancestor of ISO 8859-1 and thus Unicode . A comparison with ISO 8859-1 or the first 256 characters of Unicode reveals the many similarities.
