The 87 series was a unit - freight tank locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The steam locomotive was specially developed for use in the Port of Hamburg by Orenstein & Koppel . There were minimal curve radii of 100 meters and high tensile loads to be moved. The axle load could not exceed 17.5 t. The requirements resulted in the number of five axes. In order to keep the drive wear within reasonable limits, only the middle three wheel sets were connected by coupling rods , while the end axles of the Luttermöller type were driven by gears .

After damage to the Luttermöller drives, some vehicles were also used as 1D, D1 or 1C1.

From 1951, the class 87 locomotives were replaced by class 82 vehicles .
