The railcars of the DR 137 160 and 161 series were test railcars from the Westwaggon company . They are considered to be the first vehicles with hydrodynamic power transmission and their exterior largely corresponded to the standard railcars 137 094… 223 . The vehicles were used by the German Federal Railroad after the Second World War and were designated as the VT 33.5 series until 1963 . They are no longer there today.

history

After the 820 , these two railcars were built as additional test cars for hydraulic power transmission at the Westwaggon company in Cologne-Deutz . They were based on the tried and tested DR 137 094… 223 and differed from these vehicles only in a few details of the drive system. They were delivered in 1937 and initially used in Karlsruhe . The Deutsche Reichsbahn later ordered two more vehicles from this drive configuration with the designation DR 137 271 and 272 , but with different engines.

The 137 161 was subjected to detailed test drives at the LVA Grunewald between November 1937 and April 1938 , with a total of 5,700 kilometers covered. The vehicle was then used for operational trials on difficult hilly routes at the Kempten depot until September 1938 and was then reassigned to Karlsruhe.

DB VT 32.5 / VT 33.5

Most of the vehicles were not used during the war. After 1945 they came to Offenburg train station . It is known from the time that the VT 137 161 was the saloon railcar of the President of the French section administration until 1949. Because of their engines, they were initially given the designation VT 32 500 and VT 32 501 , after an engine swap they were classified as VT 33 501 and VT 33 502 . Both railcars were then based in the Landau depot .

The former 137 160 was retired in 1960, followed by the former 137 161 in 1963 .

vehicle description

The differences to the DR 137 094… 223 were the enlarged wheel base of the machine bogie with 4,000 millimeters and the changed interior design.

The main differences arose from the machinery. Originally the vehicles were equipped with an engine with two crankshafts . These two crankshafts were combined on a common engine output via a gear transmission. These engines were used in a large-scale test in 46 different types of railcars before 1939. Obviously, the engines had proven themselves in service, because the engine was not changed until after 1949. The hydrodynamic transmission from Voith was a converter / clutch transmission. The switch from the converter to the fluid coupling happened at around 56 km / h and was not done automatically with this gearbox, but had to be done by the engine driver. The circuits were filled and emptied with a brief overlap so that there were no traction restrictions.
