The ET 25 201 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) is an electric railcar that was created through conversion .

During the Second World War 1944/5 in the Netherlands, the German Wehrmacht had requisitioned several four-part multiple units of the type Mat '36 of the Dutch Railways built in 1937 and brought them to Mecklenburg. After the German pre-war ET 25 012 multiple unit had been successfully refurbished in 1957, the DR also intended to restore three three-part multiple units from the Dutch vehicle material in 1959.

However, extensive modifications were necessary for this. This primarily concerned the electrical equipment, since the railcars were designed for the Dutch power system of 1500 V direct current and had to be converted to the German alternating current system with 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz. Existing components from the ET 25 series were used for this. However, due to the size of the AC motors, the bogies had to be converted.

In addition, there were ambitious plans to shorten the car bodies to 24 m, a new window and door arrangement and an enlargement of the driver's cabs. Together with the poor condition of the vehicles due to the long idle time, this led to considerable delays. Due to the high expenditure, the DR moved away from the plan to recondition three multiple units and limited itself to a three-part multiple unit. In 1965 the multiple unit was finally completed. Shortly before completion, another intermediate car was refurbished at RAW Berlin-Schöneweide so that a four-part multiple unit was created. It was given the number ET 25 201. The two powered end cars were designated as ET 25 201a and -b, the intermediate cars as -c and -d. 25 201a was originally NS Bk 628, 25 201b was NS CDk 615, 25 201c was NS Ce 628 and 25 201d was NS C 602.

The ET 25 201 was based at the Leipzig- West depot and was used as an express and express train between Magdeburg , Erfurt and Zwickau . It turned out to be quite prone to failure, which was also due to the engine overload due to the intermediate car that was added later. Therefore, the multiple unit was later only used in three parts.

When the numbering system was changed in 1970, the multiple unit was given the numbers 285 201 to 204, and the number of the surplus intermediate car was also changed. The end cars were given the serial numbers 201 and 203, the intermediate cars the numbers 202 and 204. Due to the ongoing problems, the multiple unit was retired in 1971 and scrapped in 1976.
