This article describes the operation of DVB-T in Switzerland . The acronym stands for English " D igital V ideo B road casting - T errestrial" ; in German, for example, «digital, terrestrial television». DVB-T describes a variant of DVB that is used for the radio transmission of digital radio and television signals via terrestrial (earth-bound) paths. DVB-T was specified in 1997 by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in the EN 300 744 standard.

Course of the switch to DVB-T

When analogue terrestrial television was shut down on November 26, 2007, corresponding regional multiplexes were available in all four language regions ( German , Romansh , French , Italian ). The first two SRG programs in its own region and the first SRG program in the other language regions were broadcast in each multiplex . In German-speaking Switzerland and Romansh-speaking Switzerland, at the time the conversion was completed, these were SF 1 and SF two as well as TSR 1 (French) and RTSI (Italian). According to the definition, SF info and HD suisse were not broadcast.

As of 2015, the additional channel SRF info (until 2012 SF info ) will broadcast in German-speaking and Romansh-speaking Switzerland SRF 1 , SRF Zwei , SRF info , RTS Un and RSI LA 1 . RTS Un, RTS Deux , SRF 1 and RSI LA 1 are broadcast in French-speaking Switzerland, and RSI LA 1, RSI LA 2 , SRF 1 and RTS Un are broadcast in Italian-speaking Switzerland .

At the time of the changeover, only eight percent of households received television programs terrestrially. Due to the high cabling quota of around 78% of Swiss households, there was hardly any interest among private broadcasters in broadcasting private television via DVB-T. In 2011, the private broadcaster Tele Tell ran a test run in Central Switzerland .

In Upper Valais , Valaiscom AG operated the DIGITnet radio network via DVB-T from 2011 to 2013 . This broadcast a relatively large range of public and private TV and radio stations. The transmission was encrypted, the reception was chargeable.

In Graubünden , up to 20 public and private TV channels can be received via teleraetia. The transmission is encrypted, the reception is chargeable.

The Federal Office of Communications has created in early 2010, a needs assessment for future DVB-T distribution in Switzerland. The evaluation report for the hearing ends with the following sentences:

“It should be noted that a DVB-T network is currently operated with a coverage of over 99% of the Swiss population. Significant sums have also been invested in broadcasting programs on DVB-T. The sale of DVB-T receivers was also promoted; Today, Swiss households have a total of 1.5 million operational DVB-T receivers. The majority of these devices also enable the reception of HDTV programs via DVB-T based on the MPEG-4 standard. The market would then be ready for additional organizers to appear. "

Setting of DVB-T

At the end of 2018, teleraetia and, on June 3, 2019 at 9 a.m. (CEST), the broadcast of SRG programs via DVB-T in Switzerland was stopped. DVB-T is no longer part of the public service . The possibility of receiving TV via antenna has therefore been eliminated (apart from channels from neighboring countries in regions close to the border), and TV programs have only been broadcast via cable ( DVB-C ), satellite ( DVB-S ) or IP-TV since then.

This also has an impact on German cable network operators, since with the discontinuation of DVB-T the overspill regulation no longer applies.

In contrast, the local francophone channel Léman Bleu will continue to broadcast via DVB-T after June 3, 2019.

In the meantime, there are efforts by the private sector to bring some transmission sites close to the border back into operation.

An antenna for Grand Geneva is planned.
