Da'an

Da'an ( Chinese  大安 區 , Pinyin Dà'ān Qū , Zhuyin ㄉ ㄚ ˋ ㄢ ㄑ ㄩ , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tāi-an Khu ) is a southern district of the Taiwanese capital Taipei . With around 310,000 inhabitants on an area of just over 11 km², it is the most populous district in the city and at the same time the district with the highest population density.

location

Da'an's neighboring districts are Zhongzheng in the west, Wenshan in the south, Xinyi in the east, and Songshan and Zhongshan in the north. Da'an is touched or traversed by a number of major Taipei arteries, such as Zhongxiao Road . In addition, the district is connected to six lines of the Taipeher subway .

history

The Da'an area was one of the first areas in what is now Taipei to be settled by immigrants from the Chinese province of Fujian in the early 18th century . Originally the settlement was called Tāi-ôan ( Min Nan , written 大 灣). Since most of the immigrants came from Anxi County, Quanzhou City , the front part of the name An -xi was later adopted in the Taiwanese place name and changed to Tāi-an (written 大安). Until the end of the 19th century, the flat, fertile and water-rich area was dominated by agriculture. After Da'an was merged with a number of other districts in the up-and-coming metropolis of Taipei at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Japanese colonial era , the population grew steadily and the district received its current appearance, which is characterized by shops and educational institutions.

Below Zhongxiao Road there is an underground shopping area between two subway stations. The main traditional markets in the district are the Tonghua and Shida night markets and a jade market.

Da'an has an unusually high concentration of higher education institutions. In the territory of the county five universities are: the National Taiwan University (the most prestigious university in Taiwan), the Pedagogical University of Taiwan , the Pedagogical University of Taipei , the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the Technology University in Taipei . A branch of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) based in Hsinchu is located here. The Taiwanese Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Industrial Development, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, are also based in Da'an.

The "Da'an Forest Park"

The largest park in the county is Da'an Forest Park ; housing and land prices in its vicinity are among the highest in the country. There are still some museums in Da'an, as well as the Taipei Mosque, Taiwan's most important mosque .
