The Daimler-Benz DB 601 was a liquid-cooled, twelve-cylinder engine - aircraft engine with 33.9 liters of displacement and direct fuel injection , which was used in many German military and record aircraft. It was developed by Daimler-Benz from 1934 on from the DB 600 carburettor engine of the same displacement .
Daimler-Benz and various contractors produced a total of 19,180 units in the German Reich between 1937 and 1943. The DB 601 was also manufactured under license in the allied Axis powers Italy and Japan .
history
Under the direction of Hans Scherenberg , Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, in cooperation with Robert Bosch AG (since 1937 Robert Bosch GmbH), made the conversion of the DB 600 to gasoline injection ready for series production. After the first successful test runs in 1935, production of the DB 601 began in November 1937. The engine was manufactured in the Daimler-Benz factory in Berlin-Marienfelde until 1943 , at Daimler-Benz Motoren GmbH in Genshagen , the Lower Saxony engine works (NIEMO) in Braunschweig-Querum and manufactured by Henschel Flugmotorenbau (HFM) in Altenbauna near Kassel.
In 1940 at the Genshagen plant, with a production time of 2,820 hours, the cost of an engine was 29,200 Reichsmarks , which in today's currency and inflation-adjusted corresponds to a price of around 122,000 euros.
The DB 601 was used in German combat aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E and F , Bf 110 C to F , Me 210 , Heinkel He 100 , He 111 P , Dornier Do 215 and the Fieseler Fi 167 .
Licenses to replicate were given to Alfa Romeo , Fiat , Aichi and Kawasaki . The DB 601 was one of the most reliable and robust German aircraft engines of the Second World War .
Records
- On November 11, 1937, a new world speed record for land aircraft of 610.950 km / h was achieved with a Messerschmitt Bf 109 V13 with a DB-601-Re / III engine with 1660 hp, the pilot was Hermann Wurster .
- On June 5, 1938, a new world speed record for land aircraft over a distance of 100 kilometers was achieved at 634.730 km / h with a Heinkel He 100 V2 with a DB-601-Re / III engine with 1660 hp, pilot was Ernst Udet .
- On June 8, 1938, flight captain Kindermann set a new world altitude record with 5 or 10 tons payload with a Junkers Ju 89 V2 with four DB-601-Re / IV engines with 2060 hp each. The height was 9,312 and 7242 meters.
- On March 30, 1939, Hans Dieterle set a new absolute world speed record over a distance of 3 kilometers of 746.606 km / h with a Heinkel He 100 V8 with a DB-601-Re / V engine with 2770 hp.
- On April 26, 1939, pilot Fritz Wendel was able to increase the absolute world speed record over a distance of 3 kilometers with a Messerschmitt Me 209 V1 with a DB-601-Re / V engine with 2770 hp to 755.138 km / h.

All performance data apply to sea level. The short power, which was increased for a period of one minute, was usually only available in bombers and fighter bombers in order to enable a take-off with overload. Short power or start and emergency power was available in all machines, provided it was not blocked. The engines DB 601 N and E and their variants were initially only approved for climbing and fighting power of 1020 and 1200 hp respectively.
