Dakota Harris - Flight Through the Time Hole is an adventure film from 1986 that was co-produced between Australia and the USA . It is also known under the alternative title " Dakota Harris in the Den of Death ".

Australia in August 1945 , just before the end of World War II . The experienced Air Force pilot Flight Lieutenant Harris, known as Dakota Harris, is assigned to transfer a DC-3 cargo plane with a mysterious cargo via Bora Bora to Washington, DC . In addition to the scientist and clergyman Reverend Mitchell, the military General Hackett and Major Savage are also on board, although Savage and Harris share an unpleasant past. During the flight, one of the cargo boxes is opened, causing the DC-3 to enter a mysterious storm in which the timelines seem to be blurred. The machine spins, forcing Harris to ditch.
Harris' team reaches a ship graveyard in an area similar to the Bermuda Triangle, where strange psychic things happen to the men. Reverend Mitchell believes the ships may have participated in what is known as the Philadelphia Experiment . The men save themselves in lifeboats on the open sea, as they believe they have seen the coast of Easter Island , which suddenly disappears. While more and more of the stranded die in the following days, the old enmity breaks out again between Savage and Harris. Savage insists on taking the cargo boxes with him, while Harris thinks more of the well-being of his decimated crew and passengers and throws the boxes into the water. In the end, only Harris, Savage and Mitchell are saved.
Back on land, Savage is dragging Harris to a military tribunal for insubordination. Harris is convicted - also because Savage presented an affidavit from Mitchell and the court did not believe his statements that they were in the lifeboat near Easter Island. On the way to jail, Harris escapes and finds out that Savage has falsified Mitchell's testimony. In his need, he turns to the only trustworthy person: Melanie, Mitchell's assistant and daughter. Together they research the background - and are ambushed by Savage.
It turns out that the cargo is a piece of a mysterious alien stone tablet that is said to give great power. The Reverend Mitchell and a colleague were on Bora Bora in search of the secret of this tablet. Savage kidnapped Mitchell to get hold of the tablet himself. It is now up to Harris and Melanie to stop him.
Their adventurous odyssey leads over Ayers Rock to Bora Bora, where both of them find Reverend Mitchell alive. Harris follows the course of his old machine and can find it and the boxes with the slab of slab. But Savage gets ahead of him and also kidnaps Melanie, who is supposed to show him the cave with the remaining fragment.
Harris secretly follows Savage by clinging to the plane. Together with Melanie, who was able to escape, they enter the cave, which is criss-crossed by the same time phenomena as in the mysterious storm. Both can confront Savage, who has completed the board but is destroyed by its power.
The threat has been averted and Harris and Melanie become a couple.

“The title and cover set the guideline, because of course 'Dakota Harris' is nothing more than a cheap Australian rip-off from ' Indiana Jones '. And that doesn't stop with the cover, but takes place in the film itself, where there is more than just one scene that was taken directly from ' Raiders of the Lost Ark '. In addition, the script mixes everything that is mystical in some way and so you get the Bermuda Triangle as well as the Philadelphia experiment or the theories of Erich von Däniken knocked out. Leading actor John Hargreaves, who was a real star in Australia, but never wanted to work internationally, is one of the best. The mime died of AIDS in 1996. 'Dakota Harris' is anything but a good movie. Can he entertain? Absolutely. Is he having fun? In a way, yes. But can you recommend it? Only to a limited extent, most likely all those who saw this cinematic cheese 20 years ago. Conclusion: an Indiana Jones rip-off for all-rounders. "
Production notes
- The film was made at the height of the boom in classic cinema adventure films, which was sparked by the success of Raiders of the Lost Ark . " Dakota Harris " was the Australian contribution to the series triggered by " Indiana Jones ", especially since the strip from this trilogy has copied its title abundantly. In terms of content, passages and stereotypes were also adopted and converted from Indiana Jones. Harris also has a phobia compared to the snake-hating Indiana Jones - he suffers from great heights.
- The film also has large plot holes, which suggest either an illogical script, scenes removed from the final version, or a faulty German synchronization.
- In an interview with Melanie Harris asks why Savage wanted to go to Ayers Rock, whereupon Mel says that there is another monolith there. Up until that point, however, Ayers Rock had not been mentioned with any syllable in the film. The same applies to the monolith described. A possible explanation is not given later either.
- Where does an enemy fighter plane come from in the middle of Central Australia (Harris and Melanie fly from a coastal town to Ayers Rock)?
- The relationship between the Philadelphia experiment and the stone tablet or the cave on Easter Island is not explained. Nor why the bodies of the sailors from the USS Idaho are in the cave.
- Harris follows the old course and finds his DC-3. Where is the ship graveyard? There is a clear view and sunshine.
- The mysterious power in Professor Asquith's house on Bora Bora is not further described. Should it start from the fragment of the table, it had already been stolen by the time Harris and Melanie were present.
Trivia
- Harris' first name is not mentioned in the entire film. He is always addressed as Flight Lieutenant or Dakota . Presumably it should remain a secret - like that of MacGyver in the television series of the same name.
- Hugo Weaving , known from the Lord of the Rings and Matrix trilogies, has a mini role as a bat type .
