Daniel Stuart Freed (born April 17, 1959 ) is an American mathematician who deals with global analysis and connections to mathematical physics ( supersymmetry , string theory , quantum field theory ).

Life

Freed graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's and master's degree in 1981 and received his doctorate in 1985 with Isadore Singer at the University of California at Berkeley (The geometry of loop groups). As a post-graduate student , he was a Moore Instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago . From 1989 he was Associate Professor and from 1994 Professor at the University of Texas at Austin . From 1996 to 1998 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and he was a visiting researcher at IHES (1995, 1999).

In 2002/2003 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and from 1988 to 1992 a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (Twisted K-theory and loop groups). He is one of the founders of the IAS / Park City Mathematics Institute and has been on the Board of Trustees of the MSRI since 2006 , of which he has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board since 2002. In 2014 he received a Senior Berwick Prize . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
