Saskia Martens has been living in seclusion on her extensive horse farm since she was abandoned by her husband for another woman twelve years ago. One day she receives a call from the youth welfare office. Ms. Hartwig informs her that her friend Andrea died in a car accident. Saskia is the godmother of Andrea's daughter Lucy, who she last saw twelve years ago. Lucy is now 16 years old. She was born out of wedlock and Andrea avoided contact with the child's father Alex, who is now being sought. Until then, Lucy should live in the home. Saskia agrees that Mrs. Hartwig visits the stud with Lucy. On Mrs. Hartwig's advice, she lets Lucy stay at the stud until Alex is located.
Lucy turns out to be a cheeky teenager. Growing up in London, she has little use for country life, constantly taking pictures on her cell phone and chatting with her best friend. Saskia only sees Lucy when she brings her food to her room. After a week Saskia has enough. She persuades Lucy to bring horses to pasture with Fynn, who finances his architecture studies by working at the stud. After a few meters, she doesn't feel like it anymore and goes back. Now Saskia gives rules: Lucy should do something for the Internet use and first bring the horses to pasture. In revenge, she leaves the willow gate open. At the dinner that Saskia decided to have together later, Lucy leaves after a short time. Meanwhile, the horses have run away and must be caught and Saskia angrily obliges Lucy to muck out the stable the next day. Lucy runs away but doesn't get far as buses only run twice a day in the area. The ice between Lucy and Saskia thaws during the mucking out of the stable and Lucy reports to her godmother that she is to blame for Andreas death: She had argued with her mother on the cell phone when suddenly the connection was lost. Lucy believes that her mother was distracted by the argument, which caused the accident. Saskia investigates and learns that more than ten minutes passed between the phone call and the accident. A truck driver had simply overlooked Andrea. Lucy is not to blame. The news is a great relief for Lucy and the relationship with Saskia improves so much in the following days that Saskia offers her to attend a school with boarding school not far from the stud.
One day the youth welfare office reports that Lucy's father Alex has been found in Amsterdam. A short time later, Alex arrives at the stud. He is now working as a gallery owner after his career as a painter was rather unsuccessful. Lucy is enthusiastic about Alex, who only found out about his fatherhood through the youth welfare office. Saskia, on the other hand, remains skeptical, as Alex previously proved to be unreliable. Alex stays overnight and Saskia begins to see Alex in a new light, even if she doesn't like his idea of turning an unused servants' room into a studio. Saskia and Lucy visit Alex a little later in Amsterdam. When Lucy already wants to choose a room in the large loft in which she will live in the future, Alex reacts surprised, since he assumed that Lucy will continue to live with Saskia. Lucy reacts hurt and leaves and Saskia also accuses Alex of not having changed. The next morning, Alex is back at the door and wants to apologize. He has yet to learn how to properly deal with his fatherhood, and of course he wants to take Lucy into his home. However, she packed her things overnight and disappeared. Alex and Saskia start a large-scale search operation, Lucy wanted to take a bus to Amsterdam. They look for her in Amsterdam and return to the stud the next day exhausted. On the Internet you can see Lucy's profile change from the morning with a picture. Saskia realizes that Lucy is with Fynn. When confronted there, Lucy finds nothing wrong with her behavior. Once again she accuses Saskia of seeing everything too tense. Because she is now with Fynn, she would rather stay with Saskia. She now refuses to accommodate Lucy. For her as a loner, a limit has been crossed, especially since Lucy does not apologize for her behavior. She lets Lucy and Alex leave for Amsterdam coolly.
Weeks go by without Saskia calling Lucy and Alex. Only Fynn gets her to look for contact again. She drives to Amsterdam and learns on site that Alex has to give up his gallery for financial reasons. He wants to work in Basel in the future and take Lucy with him. Saskia remembers his idea of converting the servants' wing into a gallery and artist apartments, and both react enthusiastically, especially since Alex and Saskia have fallen in love with each other. A little later the inauguration of the new art gallery takes place at the stud and Fynn and Lucy as well as Saskia and Alex can now live together.

Then Lucy came under the working title Fire and Water was filmed from 14 September to 14 October 2010 in Cologne, Düsseldorf and the surrounding area as well as in Utrecht and Amsterdam . The film structures were created by Cordula Jedamski, the costumes by Elisabeth Kraus. The soundtrack for Then came Lucy , written by Marcel Barsotti , was released on CD in 2011 together with the film music for Liebe am Fjord - The Sea of Women .
The film premiered on November 5, 2011 at the 33rd Biberach Film Festival . It was first broadcast on television on April 20, 2012 on Das Erste .

Anna Julia Höhr from the Teleschau media service then called Lucy an “all-round coherent family comedy, which not only has predictable but also surprising twists. Above all, Olga von Luckwald takes on the role of the snotty big-city bitch - it's fun to watch how she and Julia Jäger throw the balls non-stop. It is also gratifying that Michael Meisheit's script also shows the refreshingly lively protagonist from her vulnerable side: The character of Lucy is not only very entertaining, but also absolutely believable.
