Chen Danqing

Chen Danqing ( Chinese  陈丹青 , Pinyin Chén Dānqīng ; born August 11, 1953 in Shanghai , People's Republic of China) is an American - Chinese painter . Chen was a lecturer at Tsinghua University , and his oil paintings of the late 1970s and early 1980s made him famous for the Tibetans.

His major work exerted a strong influence on subsequent Chinese artists, especially the Realism and Expressionists .

Life

Chen was born in Shanghai and grew up in Taishan . At the time of the Cultural Revolution , 1969, he was sent to the countryside for "re-education through work" and lived from 1970 to 1973 in the People's Commune in Ningdu , Jiangxi . At the age of 17, Chen was sent together with thousands of middle school students from the big city to a desperately poor mountain region to “learn from the farmers” as an “educated youth”. From November 1974 he was a worker in a Nanjing factory. His residence permit for Shanghai was canceled and his formal education interrupted until 1977, when university entrance exams were held again for the first time.

In 1968 he created his first oil paintings, a self-portrait that was inspired by Rembrandt . During the Cultural Revolution he studied the old masters Ilya Jefimowitsch Repin and Vasili Iwanowitsch Surikow and made drawings based on their models. He completed his studies in the oil painting department at the Central University of the Arts , which he began in 1978, with a master’s degree. Chen now began to turn to the farming world. In 1980 he went to Tibet for . In Chen's imagination, Tibet was an exotic paradise where he, the colorful, exotic world he had dreamed of, French Romanticism and he was painted by Jean-François Millet and School of Barbizon . In 1980 his painting Tibet Series caused a sensation at the National Art Exhibition Nationale in the Chinese Art Museum : it was greeted with enthusiastic approval by minded art lovers.

In 1982 he emigrated to the USA . From 1982 to 2000 he lived in New York City and moved into a furnished studio in Times Square on Broadway. During his stay in New York, he graduated from the Art Students League of New York . It was here in particular that he made the acquaintance of numerous other painters, including Chen Yifei , Ai Weiwei , Ai Xuan , He Duoling , Yuan Yunsheng , Liu Xiaodong , Xu Bing and Liu Suola . Chen for the the Tibet catalog for the exhibition at the Wally Findlay Gallery. He became an American citizen in the 1990s.

In 2000, returned to China and became a professor of oil painting at Tsinghua University. Chen lectured at various universities around the world including Peking University , Zhejiang University , University of California, Irvine , and Harvard University . He advocates reforming the Chinese education system. He also called for social reforms and became a harsh critic of the Chinese Communist Party .

His works, Shepherd - Tibet Series, regularly fetch high prices at auctions, for example one of his works in Beijing in 2007 fetched 35.84 million yuan (€ 4,896,478.00), which at the time was a record for a contemporary Chinese work of art.

He currently lives in Beijing .
