Dario Simoni

Dario Simoni (* 1901 ; † May 23, 1984 ) was an Italian-American art director and production designer who won the Oscar twice for best production design and was twice nominated for an Oscar in this category.

Life

Simoni began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1949 for films such as The Small Back Room and That Dangerous Age and was involved in the production of 34 films by 1974.

Simoni won his first Oscar for best production design in 1963 with John Box and John Stoll for the color film Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by director David Lean with Peter O'Toole , Alec Guinness and Anthony Quinn in the leading roles .

At the 1966 Academy Awards , he won his second Oscar with Box and Terence Marsh for best production design in the color film Doctor Schiwago (1965) by David Lean with Omar Sharif , Julie Christie and Alec Guinness, and he won with John DeCuir and Jack Martin Smith received an Oscar nomination in this category for the period film Michelangelo: Inferno and Ecstasy (1965) by Carol Reed, starring Charlton Heston , Rex Harrison and Diane Celento .

In 1968 he was nominated again for an Oscar for best production design with DeCuir, Lorenzo Mongiardino , Elven Webb , Giuseppe Mariani and Luigi Gervasi, namely for The Taming of the Shrew (1967) based on the stage work of the same name by William Shakespeare , directed by Franco Zeffirelli with Elizabeth Taylor , Richard Burton and Cyril Cusack .
