High school and college

Darius Garland is the son of former basketball player Winston , who played in the NBA from 1987 to 1995 . He started playing basketball at the age of five. He also played baseball as a child, but soon concentrated entirely on basketball. After he finished sixth grade, the family moved to Brentwood , Tennessee , where he then attended Brentwood Academy . In high school, Garland developed into one of the most talented point guards in the country and was named Tennessee State Mr. Basketball three times in a row . On November 13, 2017, he announced that he would play for the Commodores of Vanderbilt University from the 2018/19 season . In his senior season at Brentwood Academy , he made an average of 27.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals.

He scored 24 points in his first game for Vanderbilt on November 6, 2018. Thirteen days later, he marked his season best with 33 points in the 79:70 win against Liberty University and in his fourth game almost broke the university's record of 34 points set by Mike Rhodes in 1977. In the next game on 23 November, he was injured during a layup difficult at the meniscus and fell for the rest of the season out. On January 22, 2019, it was announced that Garland would be leaving Vanderbilt University in order to prepare for the 2019 NBA draft after recovering from his injury .
