Dante Exum (born July 13, 1995 in Melbourne , Australia ) is an Australian basketball player who has been under contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the North American professional league NBA since 2019 . The point guard was considered one of the greatest talents in his position during his high school days and has been compared to Penny Hardaway in his style of play . However, his career to date has been overshadowed by serious injuries, especially in the knee area, and Exum has so far failed to live up to high expectations.

youth

Exum was considered a great talent from a young age and was accepted into the renowned Australian sports academy Australian Institute of Sport , where NBA players such as Luc Longley , Patty Mills and Andrew Bogut have already matured. In 2013 he took part in the Nike Hoop Summit for the world selection. In the 112-98 victory of the world selection over an American youth selection, he scored 16 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Exum drew further attention shortly afterwards at the U19 World Cup . He led Australia in fourth place, scoring 18.2 points and 3.8 assists per game. He was then used for the first time in the senior national team at the Oceania Championship .

He graduated from school at the end of the year and had the opportunity to play college basketball in the United States. However, he decided against it and moved to Anaheim to prepare for a professional career. In January 2014, Exum announced that it would sign up for the NBA draft .

NBA

Exum was considered one of the top five talents in the run-up to the draft. In the 2014 NBA draft , he was selected fifth by the Utah Jazz . The contract was signed at Jazz on July 11, 2014. Exum made his NBA debut on October 30, 2014 against the Houston Rockets . He scored 5 points, 1 assist and 1 steal in the 93-104 defeat of Jazz in 10 minutes. After starting the first few games mostly from the bench, Exum pushed the nominal point guard Trey Burke to the bench during the season . Exum competed in the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge in his freshman year . Exum played all 82 games in its first year, starting in 41 games. He finished the season with 4.8 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds on average.

In August 2015 Exum suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee during a friendly between Australia and Slovenia and was out for the entire season. For the 2016/17 season Exum returned recovered and came in 66 season appearances on 6.2 points and 1.7 assists. With the jazz he reached the NBA playoffs for the first time. In a preparatory game for the 2017/18 season against the Phoenix Suns , Exum dislocated his left shoulder when attacking the basket, which threatened to be out for the rest of the season. However, he returned for the remaining 14 games of the season and was also used in the playoffs for the Jazz. In the summer of 2018, he signed a $ 33 million three-year contract with Jazz. However, the contract is heavily performance-related due to Exum's vulnerability to injury.

The start of the 2018/19 season initially went well for Exum. However, he suffered a sprain and bruise of his ankle during a game against the Detroit Pistons , causing him to be out for several weeks. Exum returned after skipping 25 games and was severely injured again after suffering a partial rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee, which left him out for the remainder of the season. For Exum this was already the third serious injury in his young career and the second to occur in the knee area. By that time, Exum had played 42 games this season and scored 6.9 points and 2.6 assists per game.

In the 2019/20 season, Exum was rarely used due to his injury and was handed over to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jordan Clarkson on December 24, 2019 shortly before Christmas .

National team

Exum has been a permanent member of the Australian national basketball team since 2013 . So he took part in the Oceania Championship in New Zealand in 2013 and won it. He was also appointed to the Australian basketball team for the 2014 World Basketball Championship . With Australia he reached the round of 16, where they were eliminated against Turkey. Exum played six games, scoring 2.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Style of play

Exum has a very good ball handling and game overview for his size, which is why he can play both guard positions. He is also considered to be an athletic and fast player who likes to pull to the basket and can pull fouls . However, he has to work on his throw from a distance, as well as train muscle mass, as he is considered too lean so far.

Others

Exum has two siblings, an older brother and a twin sister. His father Cecil Exum, an American , played at the University of North Carolina between 1980 and 1984 . There he played with the later NBA legends Michael Jordan and James Worthy . With these he won the NCAA championship in 1982. After not making the leap to the NBA in 1984, he moved to the Australian league, where he was active from 1984 to 1991.
