Dark Horse ( Danish original title: Voksne mennesker ) is a Danish-Icelandic tragic comedy by filmmaker Dagur Kári from 2005.

action

Daniel is an outsider and lives in Copenhagen . He earns his little money by spraying messages of love on public house walls as commissioned work. His opinionated friend Roger, known as Grandpa, works as an assistant in a sleep laboratory and invests his free time in training to referee football. Grandpa raves about Franc, who works in a bakery. However, due to his shyness, he fails to address her.

When he finally wants to take the risk, Franc is in the store intoxicated with psychedelic mushrooms . Grandpa loses his nerve and escapes, but Daniel brings her home and comes back a few days later to find out how she is. After meeting Franc again in a café, he realizes that he is in love and from then on sprays his own messages of love on walls.

With a new assignment, he falls into the trap of the police and is sentenced to a suspended sentence. After he is thrown out of his apartment, he makes himself available in Grandpa's sleep laboratory for a long-term experiment in order to have at least one bed.

One day it becomes clear that Daniel's Franc is pregnant. Daniel flees to Spain because he is not up to the task of being a father. When he returns, he takes Franc to a clinic for an abortion. On the way there, however, in a moment of clarity, he suddenly realizes that it is time to take responsibility and decides against the abortion.

style

The entire film is shot in black and white . Only the scene in which Daniel looks at Franc while waiting at Knippelsbro on the way to the abortion clinic is colored, which means that the peculiarity of the moment catches the viewer's eye.

Reviews

“The fact that the plot of the film is very predictable is easy to get over, that the character of Grandpa is getting a bit too ridiculous and that Nicolas Bro is not embodied as convincingly as Daniel and Francesca by Jacob Cedergren and Tilly Scott Pedersen, just a little annoying. Especially since “Dark Horse” is much more than just a stylish surface. His recordings show impressive insights into the inner worlds of his characters and make their actions appear more comprehensible to the viewer than explanations packed into the dialogues could. "

- Martin Thoma : film starts

“The tragicomedy, populated with sympathetic anti-heroes, gradually finds its way to a gently floating rhythm and opens up to meditative moments of calm. Told with a wink of humor, the film develops its story in individual, clearly separated chapters. "
