The Dart Container Line Co. Ltd. was a Bermudian container shipping company, which existed from 1969 to 1981.

history

The joint venture was founded in 1969 by the liner shipping companies Compagnie Maritime Belge from Antwerp and Bristol City Line from Bristol, as well as the transport company Clarke Traffic Services from Montreal , in order to gain a foothold in the container business, which was new at the time , without having to deal with the large investments involved on their own. The background to this development was the rapidly growing long-haul container traffic worldwide, with which competitors, such as the container pioneers Sea-Land Corporation or the newly founded consortia Overseas Containers Limited and Atlantic Container Lines, purchased large amounts of cargo from conventional general cargo lines. Before the establishment of the Dart Container Line, the Compagnie Maritime Belge was denied participation in the ACL consortium and negotiations with the Hapag-Lloyd container line and various US shipping companies also failed.

Initially, the Dart Container Line started its liner operations with three container ships chartered in Germany between Antwerp and Halifax . From Halifax the containers were transported by rail to Montreal and Hamilton . This was soon followed by two services between Antwerp, Southampton , New York and Norfolk with four semi-container ships of the CMB painter class. In 1970 and 1971 Dart received the first three new buildings with which the two liner services were combined. The new ships Dart America , Dart Europe and Dart Atlantic were among the world's largest full container ships with their carrying capacity of around 28,000 tons and a slot capacity of 1,556  TEU . At about the same time as the new ships, the Halterm container terminal operated by Clarke Traffic Services opened in Halifax .

In 1971 Bibby Line took over Bristol City Line, but later sold its shares to OOCL . After OOCL and CP Ships had set up a joint service to the St. Lawrence River , the Dart Line consortium was given up in 1981 and the shipping company was managed by the newly founded company Dart Line Canada Ltd. guided. From 1988 the services were completely taken over by the lead network of OOCL and the name Dart Container Line disappeared for good.
