Career

society

Darwin Núñez, who was born in Artigas , joined the youth department of Peñarol Montevideo for the first time in 2013 at the age of 14 . His first stay there was short-lived and he switched back to the youth of CSD San Miguel de Artigas, where he had played before. The next year he was back in action for Peñarol. He made his debut in the top Uruguayan league on November 22, 2017, when he came on as a substitute for Maxi Rodríguez in the 63rd minute of the 1: 2 away defeat by River Plate Montevideo . Due to a knee operation, he was unable to play another game for the capital city club in 2017. He also missed the entire Apertura 2018 and was not operational again until the Clausura 2018. The head coach Diego López used him regularly in this. On October 13, 2018 (12th matchday of Clausura) he scored his first goal in professional football in a 2-0 home win against CA Fénix . This remained his only goal in nine appearances in this Clausura that Peñarol was able to win. The final of the championship could also be won with a 2-1 win after extra time against city rivals Nacional Montevideo . Núñez came on as a substitute in the final minutes of extra time. After he was not used in the following Apertura in 2019, he scored a hat trick on the first day of the Intermedio in a 4-0 home win against Boston River . Until his move, he came on two more missions in which he remained without a goal.

On August 29, 2019, the Spanish second division UD Almería signed the striker for a transfer fee of four million euros, although only 80 percent of his transfer rights were secured. Bonus payments can increase the fee to six million euros. Núñez was behind Arvin Appiah , who cost the club almost nine million euros in the same summer, the most expensive new addition in the club's history. He was part of the transfer offensive of the new owner Turki Al-Sheikh , which should enable the club to move up to the first Spanish division . Núñez made his debut on October 3, 2019 (Matchday 9) in the 2: 4 away defeat by Sporting Gijón when he came on for Lucien Owona at half-time . In his first appearance in the starting line-up on matchday 13, he scored the first time for his new employer in a 3-2 home win against Extremadura UD . During this period he established himself in the starting lineup. On January 4, 2020 (22nd matchday), he scored a brace in a 4-0 away win against CD Lugo .

National team

Darwin Núñez took part in the U20 South American Championship in Chile with the Uruguayan U20 national team in the spring of 2019 , where he failed to score in six appearances. The U20 World Cup 2019 in Poland was more successful for him in the same year. There he scored twice in four games.

On October 16, 2019, he made his debut in the friendly international match against Peru for the A-selection when he came on for Brian Lozano in the 75th minute of the game . Just five minutes later he equalized the 1-1 final score.
