action

After years in exile in the US, Urania Cabral is returning to her homeland, the Dominican Republic. Her father Augustin Cabral, who was a high state official at the time of Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship , is struggling with death after a stroke, and at the urging of her aunt Adelina she decides to visit him, although she has no contact after her escape from the country had broken off to him. In her old homeland, Urania's memories of the brutal rule of the regime, the state-ordered murders, the web of intrigue and corruption, and her own cruel fate return. Her father, who had fallen out of favor with Trujillo at the time, had sent the then 14-year-old to the dictator's country house on the pretext that she had been invited to a party there in order to placate the lover of underage beauties. Trujillo had then abused and deflowered her. After Urania fled to a monastery, the traumatized youngster managed to escape abroad. Urania finally confronts her sick father with the past and also with the fact that the experiences at that time crippled her mentally and allowed her to lead a childless single life. However, her father can no longer answer because of his paralysis. Before her return to the States, Urania tells her long-kept story to her aunt Adelina.

Reviews

“The opulent image of time skilfully interweaves the individual narrative levels, is structured by flashbacks and connects historical and fictional people. The viewer is kept at a distance so that the emotional spark does not jump over. "

- Lexicon of international film

“In his earlier works, Llosa kept surprising us with one or the other crazy staging idea. In view of the serious claims of the original, he seems to have frozen like a pillar of salt for fear of the task of filming “The Goat Festival”. Apart from a few convincing equipment scenes, only an uninspired filmed dialogue alternates with the next. "
