Population development
history
Daşoguz was founded as a trading post in the north of the Karakum Desert in 1861 and was then part of the Khiva Khanate , which was a protectorate of the Russian Empire after 1873 . For a long time Daşoguz consisted of a fort and a bazaar before it developed into an urban center and received city rights in 1924. The development of the city received a boost through the connection to the railway network in the 1950s, which was also reflected in the development of the population. With the independence of Turkmenistan in 1991, the city was renamed from the Russian name Tashaus to Daşoguz.
