Dave Power (athlete)

David William "Dave" Power (born July 14, 1928 in Maitland ; † February 1, 2014 ) was an Australian athlete . The long-distance runner won an Olympic bronze medal in the 10,000-meter run in 1960 .

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Power finished seventh over 10,000 meters in 29: 49.2 minutes. He was almost a minute behind his third-placed compatriot Allan Lawrence . In 1957 Power won his first Australian championship title in the six-mile run, the Anglo-Saxon equivalent of the 10,000-meter run. In 1958 he was able to defend the title. In July he won the six-mile sprint against the Welshman John Merriman at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff . Power took seventh place in the three-mile run. Two days after the three-mile final, Power also ran the marathon and won after 2: 22: 45.6 hours with around ten seconds ahead of South African Jan Barnard .

In 1959 Power won the Australian championship title over three and over six miles, but could only defend the title in the shorter distance in 1960. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Power finished fifth in the 5000 meter run in 13: 51.8 minutes. Over 10,000 meters, he stayed in the top group until the end and won bronze in 28: 38.2 minutes behind Pyotr Bolotnikow from the USSR and Hans Grodotzki from the GDR. In 1961, Power won his last Australian title on both long distances. At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in late November in his hometown of Perth, Power won two more silver medals. Over six miles he was defeated by the Canadian Bruce Kidd , in the marathon he only had to admit defeat to the Englishman Brian Kilby after 2: 22: 15.4 hours . In 1963 he finished third in the pre-Olympic Asahi International Marathon .

In 1999 he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame .
