David Cooper (born November 2, 1973 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who has spent three seasons in the National Hockey League and three in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
David Cooper began his career in 1988 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Edmonton Mets. From 1989 to 1993 he played in the Western Hockey League for the Medicine Hat Tigers . Here the left-handed shooter was able to increase his points yield from year to year and twice became the most attacking defender of his team. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , Cooper was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in eleventh place in the first round.
He made his professional debut in 1993 in the playoffs of the American Hockey League for the Rochester Americans . In the following three seasons Cooper went on the ice for the Sabers farm team and also completed a few games in the East Coast Hockey League for the South Carolina Stingrays . In 1996 he signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs . Here he made his NHL debut and was active in both the NHL and the AHL in two seasons. In 1998 the Leafs transferred him to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Ladislav Kohn . However, they sent him to the AHL, where he played for the Saint John Flames . For the 1999/00 season , Cooper moved to Europe to the Kassel Huskies in the German Ice Hockey League . In 2000 he again accepted an offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs and played both in the NHL and for the St. John's Maple Leafs in the AHL.
In the next season he joined the Eisbären Berlin . In 2002/03 he played ten games for SKA Saint Petersburg . In 2003/04 he signed for the third time in Germany , this time with the Iserlohn Roosters . The next year he was active in the Italian Serie A for HC Alleghe and AS Asiago Hockey . From 2005 to 2007 he played in Denmark for the Rødovre Mighty Bulls . Cooper then spent another year in Italy with SG Pontebba and then ended his professional ice hockey career.
