David Kieran Nyika (* 7. August 1995 in Hamilton ) is a New Zealand boxer in the heavyweight division .

Career

The 1.93 m tall left boom began boxing in 2009. His older brother Joshua Nyika is also a boxer and was a participant in the 2015 World Championships .

David Nyika was New Zealand Junior Champion in 2011 and New Zealand Junior Champion in 2012 and 2013. He was also a participant in the World Junior Championships 2011 in Astana and the 2012 World Youth Championships in Yerevan .

In 2014 he won the New Zealand light heavyweight championships, the Vllaznia tournament in Albania and the Commonwealth Games in Scotland . He defeated among others Valentino Manfredonia and Kennedy St-Pierre . At the Feliks Stamm Tournament 2014 in Poland he won a bronze medal after losing to Pawel Siljagin in the semi-final .

In 2015 he won the Feliks Stamm Tournament and the Oceania Championship in Australia by beating Jason Whateley in the final . He then started with his brother at the 2015 World Championships in Qatar , where he was eliminated by Rustam To'laganov .

In 2016 Nyika again won the New Zealand championship title and the national Olympic qualification in Auckland . In the Asia-Oceanic qualification in China , he defeated Ihab Darweesh , but was eliminated again in the quarterfinals against To'laganov. At the global qualifying tournament in Baku , he beat Kevin Kuadjovi, then lost to Roy Korving and was therefore unable to buy an Olympic ticket.

In 2017 he again won the Oceania Championship in Australia by beating Jason Whateley in the final and started for the British Lionhearts team in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), where he defeated Kevin Kuadjovi and Anton Pinchuk. At the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg , he reached the quarter-finals against Igor Tesiev from Germany, where he was eliminated from the Olympic champion Yevgeny Tishchenko .

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, he won the gold medal by defeating Yakita Aska, Christian Tsoye, Cheavan Clarke and Jason Whateley . He also took part in the 2019 World Championships in Yekaterinburg , where he was eliminated by Muslim Gajimagomedov .
