David Oppenheim (rabbi)

David Oppenheim (born December 18, 1816 in Leipnik (today Lipník nad Bečvou , Moravia ); † October 21, 1876 in Vienna ) was a rabbi in Jamnitz (today Jemnice , Moravia) and Nagybecskerek, Banat (today Zrenjanin , Serbia).

Life

David Oppenheim came from a family of rabbis from Moravia. His father, Bernhard Issachar Baer Oppenheim (1790-1859), was a rabbi in Eibenschütz (today Ivančice in Moravia). After studying yeshiva , he went to Prague in 1834, where he continued his talmudic studies and also attended lectures in philosophy at the university. In 1846 he was appointed rabbi in Jamnitz, where he was replaced by his brother Joachim Heinrich Oppenheim in 1858 , and in 1859 he was appointed rabbi in Nagybecskerek , then Hungary , which he remained until his death. He was also appointed chairman of the Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest , but this did not come about due to his death.

Oppenheim wrote many articles for the journals Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums , monthly , Bet ha-Midrash and others. Oppenheim's son Joachim Oppenheim became a rabbi in Karlsbad .
