David Traugott Kopf (Sorbian Dabit Boguwěr Głowan , Latinized Wowanus ; born April 13, 1788 in Schwarzkollm , Upper Lusatia , Kingdom of Saxony ; † November 2, 1865 in Berlin , Kingdom of Prussia ) was a Sorbian educator .

Life

David Traugott Kopf began his work as a village school teacher in the Sorbian communities of Kackrow , Papitz and Fehrow , where he wrote and edited a "Wendish hymn book".

In 1815 he became a teacher at the Cottbus Wendish parochial school. It was characterized by numerous innovations and impulses for education in the Sorbian language. Such training was viewed by the Prussian authorities at that time as unnecessary or even harmful. Shaped by the ideas of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi , he called for uniform reading material. He put through a school house for the 400 schoolchildren, for which the city of Cottbus provided land, but the municipalities of Ostrow , Brunschwig and Sandow could not agree on the financing.

In 1816 Kopf founded the "Teachers Conference Society" as the first teachers' association in Cottbus, and after the end of the parochial school in 1819, he became a teacher in the Neuzelle preparatory institute .

In 1825 he became the educational inspector of the institution for morally neglected children at Hallescher Tor in Berlin and remained so until his retirement.
