David tank
David William Tank (born June 3, 1953 ) is an American biophysicist and neurophysiologist .
Life
Tank earned a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Case Western Reserve University in 1976 . He then attended courses in neurobiology at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole , Massachusetts . In 1983 he earned a Ph.D. in biophysics with Watt W. Webb at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York . As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked at AT & T Bell Laboratories , where he became director of the 1991 Biological Computation Research Department of the now Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies rose.
In 2001, Tank received a professorship in molecular biology and molecular physics at Princeton University in Princeton , New Jersey . Since 2005 he has been - together with Jonathan Cohen - director of the local institute for neurosciences .
Act
Together with Winfried Denk , Tank developed the first important applications of multiphoton microscopy : visualization of calcium channel- dependent signal transmission in living neurons . Both used the method to understand the cellular mechanisms and neuronal excitation circuits that underlie basic brain functions - such as direction decision-making or navigation in complex environments.
Tanks work deals with the measurement, analysis and recording in mathematical models of electrochemical signal transmission in the nervous system . He was able to make contributions to methods of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), by means of which nerve activity can be visualized in vivo . Tank was able to elucidate the mechanisms of persistent neural activity , a frequently observed phenomenon of brain activity, which is associated with the use of short-term memory .
Tank serves on the board of directors of the Janelia Farm Research Campus at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute .
