Ryazanov around 1923

David riazanov ( Russian Давид Борисович Рязанов , actually Dawid Borisovich gold roof , Давид Борисович Гольдендах * 10. March 1870 in Odessa , † 21st January 1938 in Saratov ) was a Russian Marxist and archivist. A Narodnik in his youth , he became known in the 1920s and 1930s as the first editor of many previously unprinted works by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels .

Life

Ryazanov came into contact with the international labor movement even before the First World War , at that time embodied primarily by the social democratic parties of Europe. In 1909 he was commissioned by a Viennese foundation to publish the protocols and documents of the First International (IAA) - an extensive project for which he visited archives all over Europe, but which failed when the First World War broke out. At the suggestion of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Dietz , Rjasanow was commissioned by August Bebel to make extensive reviews and additions to Bebel's book The Woman and Socialism . Bebel thanked for the "comprehensive help" from "N. Ryazanoff ”while editing the changes for the 50th edition in 1909.

After the October Revolution of 1917 , Ryazanov was head of the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow from 1920 to 1930 and worked on the First Marx-Engels Complete Edition (MEGA) from 1924 . In mid-February 1931 Ryazanov, who had come into conflict with Stalin on several occasions since 1922 , was arrested for contacts with the Mensheviks living in exile , expelled from the party and exiled to Saratov. Leon Trotsky commented on the arrest and deportation of his friend Ryazanov in 1931 with the words: “With Ryazanov we are dealing with a person who has participated in the revolutionary movement for more than forty years [...]. Ryazanov fell victim to personal decency. The old revolutionary said to himself: It is possible to guard your tongue with clenched teeth, but not to become an enthusiastic lackey. ”Ryazanov was initially able to continue to work scientifically in exile, but then fell victim to the Great Terror . He was arrested in 1937 for “right-wing Trotskyism”, sentenced to death in early 1938 and shot immediately after a quarter of an hour's trial.

His wife Anna Lvovna Ryazanova fought for her husband's rehabilitation since 1931. In 1937 she was sentenced to eight years in a camp as the wife of an “ enemy of the people ” and was not informed of the fate of Dawid Ryazanov even after her release. It was only under Khrushchev that the case could be opened. Both Ryazanovs were rehabilitated in 1958. But it was not until 1989/90 that Ryazanov's expulsions from the party and the Academy of Sciences were reversed.

Ryazanov, who at the time was in correspondence with Karl Kautsky , Carl Grünberg and Friedrich Pollock in Germany, wrote a comment on the work by Karl Marx, "Revelations of the diplomatic history of the eighteenth." Which was not printed in the German edition of the Marx-Engels work edition century ” , which appeared in David Urquhart's newspaper “ The Free Press ” from 1856 to 1857 .

Quote

“I am not a Bolshevik , I am not a Menshevik , I am not a Leninist . I am only a Marxist and, as a Marxist, I am a communist . "

- David Ryazanov : Moscow 1924
