Day69 is the debut mixtape by US rapper 6ix9ine . It was released on February 23, 2018.

backgrounds

In 2017, 6ix9ine first became known through its individually published songs on the SoundCloud website and was able to expand this further in the following months through live performances and a high number of views on video portals and streaming services. Due to his controversial extra-musical past (he was present at pornographic recordings of a 13-year-old girl , but did not engage in any sexual acts himself), his unusual appearance, and his energetic appearance on his songs, he quickly became a controversial figure in hip-hop , the highly polarized both privately and artistically. When his first full-fledged publication Day69 was released, the artist was already well-known within the scene thanks to his online presence. The meteoric, but also scandalous career of 6ix9ine, including the popularity of his first widely published work, was compared with that of XXXTentacion , as both artists had legal problems at the time of their breakthrough, stood out from the mainstream , and attracted attention at about the same time and about the same Website gained fame.

A large number of different producers worked on Day69 with Flamm , Beat Menace , Pi'erre Bourne , Koncept P , Toopristine , Walteezy , Phosphate , Taz Taylor , MjNichols , Pharaoh Vice , Suxx , Sticksonthebeat , Boi-1da and DJ SpinKing . With Tory Lanez , Young Thug , A Boogie wit da Hoodie , Fetty Wap and Offset , five commercially successful guest musicians have also been won over for the mixtape . 6ix9ine wrote all the songs himself, with all the rappers additionally heard on the work also acting as authors of their parts. A special controversy surrounded the collaboration with Pi'erre Bourne, who created the beat of the song GUMMO , which can be heard in two versions on Day69 and is 6ix9ine's first chart success in the USA . The producer originally made the instrumental available to rapper Trippie Redd for one of his songs, but he later passed it on to the controversial musician. Due to its conflict with the law, however, Bourne did not want to have anything to do with him and had his name, originally built into the beat, deleted from the recording. Furthermore, after the breach of trust, he ended his collaboration with Redd.

Day69 appeared in three versions. The Standard Edition contains eleven songs and is available digitally or as a vinyl record . There is also an edition called Day69: Graduation Day , which has an additional song and can also be purchased in the same formats or on CD . The Japanese version also includes Tati , the lead single from 6ix9ines, the album Dummy Boy , which was not released at the time .

The singles Gummo , Kooda and Keke were decoupled from the regular version of the mixtape . All three titles were moderate commercial successes in the US, with Gummo being the biggest hit at # 12. In addition, Billy , Rondo and Gotti could also prove themselves in the local charts. In addition, music videos were published for all of the songs in the work .

Music and lyrics

Most of the songs from Day69 to at least the in their beat selection Trapgenre be attributed, as they (distorted partly strongly) to 808 - bass drums , fast hi-hats and snares set, where the synthesizer are partially mixed unusually dominant in the foreground. 6ix9ines rap style clearly stands out from that of most artists of the genre, as it is performed very energetically and loudly and at times reminds of Screamo . The repeated use of gun noises is also characteristic . In terms of content, the songs are gangsta rap songs that revolve a lot about violence , gang crime and a rough lifestyle .

Cover design

At Day69 two different cover artwork have been published; one for the regular and one for the Graduation Day edition. Both are drawn two-dimensionally, kept in striking bright colors and show the same motif in different animation styles. 6ix9ine is posing, wearing a gold necklace and a denim jacket , in front of a landscape reminiscent of the fantasy genre , in which a castle and mountains can be seen. Big clouds adorn the sky . On the cover of Day69: Graduation Day , the rapper also holds a sleeping, small, white dog .

A day after publication of the mixtapes wrote Webkünstler cryptidsp00n a public post about that of Matteo Rainini drawn motive of the standard edition of one of his own images traced was. Instead of 6ix9ine, however, the original character Flame Princess from the animation series Adventure Time was shown. Although he noticed the plagiarism earlier when Rainini first made it available to the public online, he initially did not recognize its use as the cover of a successful music project. Rainini then edited his Internet post, in which he presented the picture, so that cryptidsp00n was now named as a source of inspiration, but without - as is common in the industry - linking its profile and with a spelling error .

criticism

Day69 received mostly negative reviews. Above all, the rapid signs of wear and tear of the style used on the mixtape, the seriousness with which the 6ix9ine presented its gimmicks , and the lack of lyrical skills were criticized . Although potential was recognized in the wild, rough performance of the rapper, which provocatively stands out from other representatives of the genre, this would remain unused because the musician repeats himself too often and the fascination would quickly subside. There were only a few mixed or positive reviews. However, the title GUMMO was highlighted as a highlight

success

Day69 was a commercial success in some countries and was able to land in the top ten of the charts in some places. The mixtape reached 4th place in the USA , 5th place in Canada and 10th place in the Netherlands . In the rest of the world it was comparatively moderate. In Germany it got the position 44, in Austria 39 and in Switzerland 20.
