Dummy Boy is the debut album by the US rapper 6ix9ine . It was released on November 27, 2018.

backgrounds

Already published in February 2018 6ix9ine with Day69 one in some countries very successful mixtape with which he managed to enter the charts in the top ten of American US. However, this commercial breakthrough was followed by a time when the musician made headlines primarily through conflicts with the law . Because organized crime and illegal possession of arms , the rapper must be in an ongoing process to stand trial, where he could see a 32-year prison. Due to these private circumstances, the release date for Dummy Boy , originally set for November 23, 2018, has been postponed indefinitely. When the album but shortly thereafter in the form of leaks freely accessible on the Internet showed up, man, the work decided four days later but officially surrendered. 6ix9ine sat at this time still in custody .

With Tay Keith , DJNekoLito , CuBeatz , Murda Beatz , YoungLan , Felipe S , Scott Storch , Avedan , Sool Got Hits , Ronny J , Ovy on the Drums , Michael Mora , Boi-1da , DJ SpinKing and Take a Daytrip worked a high number to producers in the creation of the music, in addition, some commercially extremely successful guest musicians could be won for the project; only the title Wondo does not have a feature . The interpreters Nicki Minaj , Kanye West and Anuel AA can each be heard on two songs. 6ix9ine wrote on all of the songs, with the support of the respective duet partners and producers, as well as sporadic additional songwriters .

Four singles were released from the album: Tati , FEFE , Bebe and Stoopid . Fefe debuted at number 3 on the United States' charts, becoming the musician's first and to date only top ten hit in his home country. The song sold very well and was awarded eight times platinum, and it was also the first 6ix9ine track to make it into the German , Austrian and Swiss charts. The other three releases, as well as the songs Kika , Rondo , Mama , Tic Toc and Waka , which are not available as singles , achieved moderate positions in the USA. Kika also became the musician's only top ten hit to date in the UK , where it reached number 9.

The evaluation of the official US-American chart placement of the album by Billboard led to some ambiguities and complications. After it had already been announced that the plant was in second place, the magazine corrected itself and retrospectively declared Dummy Boy to be the front runner of the week in question. However, this correction was revised days later and the work Astroworld by rapper Travis Scott , originally chosen as the number one album , now retained its title. Counting the affected period turned out to be so difficult because the sales figures of the two albums at that time only differed by about 200 units, which, according to the magazine, is "historically close".

Music and lyrics

Dummy Boy is primarily the Trapgenre attributed and is often deep 808 - bass drums , fast hi-hats and claps and snares dominated instrumentals . By strong dancehall elements of individual songs there are also increasingly also beats that the mainly in Europe popular hybrid genre Afrotrap sector. In addition to his energetic rap , which is reminiscent of Screamo , which has predominantly been used to date , 6ix9ine also performs his songs in a calm voice or to some extent sung. He also repeatedly uses the autotune voice effect . The lyrics of the album deal with crime , the rapper's libido and the prejudices against his Mexican origin.

The cover, created with 3D animation , shows a 6ix9ine, strongly stylized according to the child's scheme, who, wearing a red jacket and grinning over his shoulder , stands facing away from the camera. criticism

Dummy Boy received almost unanimously negative reviews in the English-speaking world and was mostly panned harder than 6ix9ine's previous mixtape, which was already below average. The album was received as soulless and lack of surprises and the artist as lyrically talentless and annoying in his lecture. It was felt that the contributions of the guest musicians sounded significantly better than those of the main artist. Some critics also expressed negative comments about the private person 6ix9ine in their album reviews.

In Germany, however, the verdict was mixed, and unlike the consistently poorly rated Day69 , Dummy Boy was able to convince some of its critics. 6ix9ine's flair for hits and his charisma , which would make up for his lack of finesse, were praised here . Although he was not awarded any musical talent worth mentioning, the energy of his performance would carry the songs so far that they would be recognizable and fun. The guest musicians and the beats were also very well received.

success

Dummy Boy was a huge commercial success in several countries. It reached number two in the charts in the USA , Canada and Sweden , and it was also in the top ten in the Netherlands , Norway , Denmark and New Zealand . In Finland , the sales figures were even enough for the top of the charts. Despite a successful single and increased media interest, the work sold only moderately to poorly in German-speaking countries. While the album managed to climb to positions 35 and 30 in Austria and Switzerland, it could not prove itself in the German charts.
