Dayanita Singh (* 1961 in New Delhi , India ) is an Indian photographer .

Life

Singh studied visual communication at the National Institute for Design in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat from 1980 to 1986 and then went to the International Center of Photography in Manhattan in New York City to study documentary photography and photojournalism for two years .

Singh started out as a photojournalist for international magazines and newspapers such as the New York Times and London's The Times in the 1980s . Much of her work was black and white photographs and dealt with her homeland and portrayed the Indian middle and upper class. Other photo series were taken in places like Goa without showing people. In 1986 she published a photo book in New Delhi about the Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain .

In 2001 the Scalo Verlag in Zurich published Singh's book Myself Mona Ahmed about a representative of the third sex , a hijra , who she observed and photographed for a period of 13 years. The text was written by Mona herself in e-mails sent to Switzerland.

Singh lives and works in both New Delhi and Goa.
