Wanda Wilhelmine Auguste von Debschitz-Kunowski , born von Kunowski (born January 8, 1870 in Hammer, Czarnikau district , † April 23, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German portrait photographer .

Debschitz-Kunowski was the daughter of the Prussian major August von Kunowski (1836-1883) and his wife Helene, née von Bethe (1837-1887). George August Kunowski (1757–1838), pastor prim. at the Friedenskirche zu Schweidnitz , was the older brother of her great-grandfather.

She married the painter Wilhelm von Debschitz (1871–1948), the son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Kolmar von Debschitz (1809–1878) and Pauline von dem Borne (Haus Berneuchen, Kr. Landsberg ) (1830–1878) in Görlitz on August 16, 1898 . 1912). From the marriage, which was divorced in July 1924, the children Wanda (1899–1986), Wolf-Dietrich (1901–1972) and Irene von Debschitz (1903–1990) emerged. Wanda jun. was married to Erich Ziegert (1900–1978), her sister Irene to the artist Alexander Schawinsky .

Life

After studying in Berlin with the painter Carl Gussow (around 1890) Debschitz-Kunowski moved to Munich and took lessons in the painter Heinrich Nauen's studio . Around 1895, small handicrafts such as wooden trays and cans were created. In 1900, she attended the new " Teaching and Research Institute for Photography " in Munich and took lessons from the American Frank Eugene Smith .

From 1902 to 1905 she worked in the metal workshop of the Debschitz School , her husband's art school , since it was founded . From 1905 to 1914 she was a photography teacher there and at the same time took pictures of the works of the artists working there. In addition, she carried out private assignments such as portraits of Munich personalities and of students from the Debschitz School and made landscape photographs from which oil prints were made. At that time, her photos were published in magazines.

In 1914 she followed her husband to Hanover , who had found a new position there after selling his art school. In 1918 she worked on the photo publication Der Akt .

In 1921 she separated from her husband, from whom she was divorced in 1924, and founded her own photo studio in Berlin. There she specialized in taking pictures of craft objects, including porcelain for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin , and portraits of personalities such as Max Planck , Clara Rilke-Westhoff and Albert Einstein . She also took photographs of modern architecture and exhibitions.
