Hans-Werner Deim

Hans-Werner Deim (born August 5, 1934 in Heinrichswalde ; † January 20, 2015 in Strausberg ) was a German officer . He was major general and the last planning chief of the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR .

Life

The son of a painter, born in East Prussia and relocated to the Soviet occupation zone after the war , grew up in Mieste near Gardelegen. After attending school, he became a member of the German People's Police on June 18, 1952 . He began his service as a candidate for the VP and courser of the VP readiness Quedlinburg and the command school Karpin in the former district of Ueckermünde . From 1953 to 1954 he attended the officers' school in Naumburg and in 1954 became a member of the SED . From 1955 to 1956 he was adjutant to the chief administration cadre of the KVP and the NVA. From 1956 to 1960 he studied successfully at the military academy "MW Frunze" and received the gold medal. He was then employed as chief of staff and officer for operational work in the Motorized Rifle Regiment 28. From 1961 to 1962 he was chief officer for operational training and 1962-1963 Deputy Director Operational Command of the Military District V . From 1963 to 1966 he worked as a senior officer for the land forces and from 1966 to 1971 as a deputy head of department in the operational administration of the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV). From 1971 to 1973 he attended the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KJ Voroshilov" in Moscow and again received a gold medal. From 1973 to 1976 he was the deputy commander and chief of staff of the 11th motorized rifle division as a colonel . Deim was transferred to the MfNV in 1976 and until 1978 was deputy head of the main staff for operational issues and chief operational administration in the MfNV.

On October 7, 1977 he was appointed major general by the chairman of the GDR National Defense Council , Erich Honecker . From 1979 to 1982 he acted as deputy chief of the main staff for operational issues. His last post in the NVA from 1982 to 1990 was that of the head of the combat readiness administration and operational training of the MfNV or head of the planning staff of the Ministry for Disarmament and Defense (MfAuV). On September 30, 1990, he was released from the NVA.

Deim was a member of the Society for Legal and Humanitarian Assistance (GRH). He was married to Maria Deim. Deim died at the age of 80 and was buried in the Evangelical Cemetery in Strausberg.
