Demjansk ( Russian Демянск ) is an urban-type settlement and former city with 5365 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia . It is located 100 km southeast of Veliky Novgorod and 53 km northwest of Ostashkow on the Jawon river in the northwestern Russian Oblast of Novgorod . The location on the northern edge of the Valdai Hills is the center of Rajons Demyansk.

The first evidence of the place comes from 1406. From 1824 to 1927 Demyansk was a district town.

Before the occupation by the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War in 1941, the city had around 3,400 inhabitants (as of 1939). During the almost five-month battle of Demyansk , which began on January 18, 1942 , the place was completely destroyed.

After the construction of corridors in the boiler in the summer of 1942 - in the opinion of all the management staff involved - the clearance was the only sensible solution. However, this was rejected by the Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht, Adolf Hitler , on the grounds that the boiler area was needed as a starting point for later operations against Moscow. After the military situation on the Kessel fronts had become more and more untenable, the Wehrmacht High Command did not approve the evacuation until February 1, 1943. The troops withdrew from February 17 to the end of February 1943 as planned to positions east of the Lowat River and by mid-March 1943 to the final main battle line on the Redja River. The evacuation took place during the large-scale Soviet attack ( Operation Polarstern ), which began on February 15, 1943, with the aim of finally liquidating the boiler area after several unsuccessful attempts.

The German prisoner-of-war camp Popowo Boloto was located on the outskirts of the city, and according to official figures, 20,000 people died there.

On July 5, 1944, Demyansk District became part of Novgorod Oblast. On December 28, 1960, the city became an urban-type settlement.
