history

The place was first mentioned in the 13th century as Wolost Morjowa in the Novgorod Republic . With the spin-off of the Novgorod governorate from the Saint Petersburg governorate, which had existed since 1710, in 1727 he came to its Ujesd Staraja Russa , on August 7, 1824 to the newly designated Ujesd Demjansk . At that time the village was insignificant and part of the Volost Moissejewo ; the eponymous village is about 1.5 km north on the right bank of the Marjowka.

With the introduction of the rajon structure in August 1927, Marjowo came to the Molvotizki rajon, based in Molwotizy, 20 km northeast . During the Second World War , the area was occupied by the German Wehrmacht in early September 1941 . Marjowo was recaptured by the Red Army at the end of January 1942 as part of the Demyansk Battle , and was badly affected, but less so than the Molvotizy Rajon center, which had been in the front for a long time. On February 19, 1944, the Rajon seat was moved to Marjowo, but the name of the Rajon was initially retained.

On February 1, 1963, the Molvotizki rajon was temporarily dissolved and its territory joined the Demjanski rajon. On December 30, 1966, the Rajon was restored under its current name, adapted to the administrative seat of Marjowo.
