List of cities in Russia |
Borowitschi ( Russian Боровичи ) is the second largest city in Russia 's Novgorod Oblast . The place has 53,690 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northern foothills of the Valdai Heights 194 km from Veliky Novgorod . Borowitschi is also located on the Msta River and is also the largest town on this body of water.
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1495. In 1770 Borowitschi was raised to the rank of city by Tsarina Catherine II . Due to the fact that the place is on the Msta, many residents worked in inland shipping, as the river was an important link between central Russia and the Baltic Sea .
With the advent of the railway in the 19th century, the Msta lost its importance as a transport route, and so did Borowitschi. In 1855 many brick factories were built in the region . Even today, a large part of the population works in brick production.
During the Second World War there was the POW camp 270 in Borowitschi, which housed several thousand prisoners from 1944 to 1947. In a prisoner-of-war cemetery near the sub-camp (7) 270/1 , around 3,000 dead were buried, mostly in mass graves. The camp was closed in 1953.
