history

In 1813, during the Wars of Liberation, in the run-up to the Battle of Hagelberg near and in Zitz, there was fighting between Prussian and French units. As part of a reconnaissance mission against troops of the French General Jean-Baptiste Girard , who in Ziesar was suspected moved on August 24, Friedrich August Ludwig von der Marwitz with four battalions , three squadrons and a gun of Brandenburg from. The association moved over the former Heerstraße Brandenburg – Magdeburg . In Viesen were infantry battalions and the cannon posted. The three cavalry squadrons then began the reconnaissance against the French with a fourth one from a Rittmeister von Erxleben, who was standing on an outpost in the area .

The 2nd squadron under Lieutenant Lessing came across a French outpost near Viesen, which it pursued as far as behind Rogäsen and chased away over the Fiener Damm . Three prisoners of the 13th Hussar Regiment fell into the hands of the Prussians . Von der Marwitz intended to pursue the French across the dam through the Fiener Bruch . However, he was informed by farmers that in nearby Zitz on this side of the dam there had been a French division since the previous day, looting food and cattle. Since, under the conditions of an unsecured side, crossing the Rivendell, the French would have been behind, was not advisable, the squadron Erxlebens was sent to secure the situation.

The approximately 30 riders of the 5th Kurmärkische Landwehr-Kavallerie-Regiment succeeded in an attack riding down the slope of the Karower Platte and with the help of the Zitzer village population, after a short skirmish, rubbing up the 120 plundering soldiers of the 3rd Voltigeur Company of the 26th French Light Regiment and about 100 to be caught. 1 captain , 1 lieutenant and 98 soldiers are said to have fallen into the hands of the Prussians. Several French fell, only one managed to escape. On the Prussian side, 7 injured soldiers, 1 killed and 9 wounded horses were counted. One of the injured was Rittmeister von Erxleben , who was wounded by bayonet stabs.

The prisoners were taken to Brandenburg an der Havel. The Prussians learned about them from an approximately 9,000-strong division in Ziesar and the French cavalry near the village of Bücknitz . A little later the French associations appeared on the other side of the Fiener Damm, but withdrew again due to the Prussian security. For his part, von Marwitz did not dare to cross the dam because of the threat of losses, as it was protected on the south side by French infantry. Since the reconnaissance mission was successful, von der Marwitz rather returned to Brandenburg.
